THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, JANUARY 1, 1986. Brussels Juniors tie Tavistock in tough game BY LOIS McARTER The Brussels Juniors travelled to Tavistock on Friday night, December 20 to play hockey. They opened the scoring in the first period with a goal by Murray Dewar assisted by Kevin McArter and Marty Rutledge. Tavistock came back and quickly tied the game. Mike Vincent found an open corner and deflected two quick goals for Brussels with Dave Schmidt and Tim Fritz getting assists on the first and Jim Bender and Schmidt on the second to give Brussels the lead again. Tavistock put one more on the board before the period ended at 3 - 2. BY RUSTY BLADES Friday, December 20 saw the Blyth novice team travel to Milver- ton for a final game before the Christmas break. Expectations were high for a victory in this contest but costly defensive miscues led to a dis- heartening 3 - 1 defeat. It took two periods for the Blyth squad to get untracked and by that time it was a case of too little, too late. Milverton took a 2 - 0 lead in the first period and increased it to 3 - 0 in the second period with all the goals coming as a direct result of glaring defensive errors by all the players on the ice. Blyth came to life in the third period and skated hard but the Milverton goalies and the two goalposts made stop after stop to preserve the win, although Blyth did manage one goal. Wingers James McNichol and Jonathan Collins set up centreman Ryan Chamney who scored Blyth's only goal of the game with a hard wrist shot to the lower corner of the net that the Milverton goalie is probably still looking for. A very frustrating game to watch as Blyth lost 3 - 1. The Blyth Oldtimers Hockey Club has announced its line-up for the January 11th game against the CKNX Try Hards at the Blyth arena. Wayne "Chico" McDougall will tend goal. The defence consists of: Bill "Volts" Bromley; Bruce "Gump" Mason; Bruce "Elbows" Bromley; Jim "Hit-Man" Carter Hubbards, Mannings, Baintons win in Blyth I.H.L. In the first game on December 22 Hubbards beat Watsons by a score of 11 - 2. Scoring for Hubbards were Brian Bromley with three, Ben Hakkers withtwo, Dennis Knox with two, Brian Westberg with two, Brad Bromley withone and Brent Andrews also with one. Scoring for Watsons were Bruce Howson and John Watson. In the second Mannings beat the Blyth Inn by a score of 6 - 3. Wayne McDougall scored five times for Mannings and Don Shields scored once. Scoring for the Inn were Kurt Whitfield, Steve Howson and Steve Bowers. The third game Baintons beat Radfords by a score of 10 - 7. Barney Stewart scored five times for Baintons, Scott Stevenson scored four times and Jim Dickson scored once. Scoring for Radfords were Randy Boyer with two, Steve Nixon with two, Rick Scrimgeour with one, Darry Chalmers with one and Darryl Youngblut also with one. Jim Bender upassisted added one more for Brussels early in the second but Tavistock kept the game in reach by adding one too. Kevin McArter assisted by Dewar and Rutledge connected for the fifth Brussels goal. Tavistock never let up and added two more goals to tie the game once more. Kevin Ruttan picked up his first goal of the night unassisted and put Brussels in the lead, only to have the Braves came back and tied the score at six to end the second period. Tavistock came out strong in the third period to score two quick goals and take a 8 - 6 lead in the game. After sitting out the second and Bob "Hip-Check" Hillis. The forward line will feature: Gary "Sawdust" Courtney; Bruce "LaFlour" Howson; Paul "Cementskey" Yanchus; Tom "Skooter" Black; Doug "Red Line" Scrimgeour; Gord "Rag-it" Haggitt; Tony "the Stick" Van Bakel; Rick "Rocket" Finch; Grant "Gunner" Elliott and Jim "Lube Job" Dickson. This game against the Try Hards calls for a special plan of attack, so the Blyth club has called up the top line from the Londesboro Maple Loafs. Keith "Red" Allen will centre John "Jay Are" Radford and the unknown scorer.... Rusty Blades. C.K.N.X. has yet to submit their lineup and rumour has it that they are scurrying around for last minute replacements to bolster their squad. Remember to come down to the arena on January 11 for a night of great entertainment and support the work of `Blyth Minor Sports." 0.1 I" • 17( Kodak papAc Fr*, 9:604 100k. ,/ period not feeling well, Murray Dewar assisted by Kevin McArter and Tim Fritz on the first goal, and McArter on the second goal came up with two goals for Brussels and tied the game at 8. Brussels managed to hold on to the tie. Jeff McGavin tested out the nets in the third period after Mike Smith had kept them in place for the first two periods. Blyth Atoms lose crown by one shot It was a week of so-close-and- yet-so-far for the Blyth Atom hockey team. Dec. 21 the team travelled to Zurich to take part in a house league hockey tournament. In sthe first game against Parkhill, they dropped behind 2 - 0 before starting a comeback. Danny Van Bakel, scored the first goal from his defense position assisted by centre Michael McNichol. Then Michael McNichol came back to score the tying goal with an assist from Rob Finch. Rob Finch then set up the winning goal by Danny Van Bakel and the team moved on to the next round. Sunday morning Blyth parents drove through a combination of snow, freezing rain and high winds to get the team to Zurich only Our 11 skaters and two goalies were lucky to break even against a full Tavistock bench and an arena that had the most active boards I've seen. The Braves used the boards more than their linemates to get the puck down the ice and in front of our goalie. MINOR HOCKEY The midgets were at home to Harriston on a very wintry night Wednesday, Dec. 18. The home team defeated the vrsitors 10 - 2. On Friday night three teams were busy at home. The Novice team was at home to Clinton whom they defeated 3 - 1. Ryan Finch scored the first goal for Brussels assisted by Tim Machan and Bret Clarkson. Brad Mulvey added the next two goals for the home team with Matt Lee assisting on both goals. Zurich Atoms provided the opposition for the second game of the ni ght. They defeated Brussels 5 - 1. Todd Machan scored the only goal for the home team unassisted. The Zurich peewees were also in town but didn't fair q uite so well. The local boys defeated them 11 - 0. Steve Fritz led the attack with three goals, Scott Bremner two g oals, with sin g les g oin g to Jamie Nicholson, Todd Rice, Andrew McCutcheon, Darren Johnston, Steve McCutcheon and Danny Beuerman. Assists were picked up by Scott Johnston, Greg Wheeler, Brian McArter, Greg Mulvey, Dan Beuerman and Andrew McCut- cheon. t Al - Blyth Novices lose close one Visa Accepteth, QUALITY - Photofinishing by Benjamin Film at SNYDER STUDIO, WINGHAM Your professional camera store owned and operated by a professional photographer OPEN SIX DAYS A WEEK - 357-1851 rigeiri
