Many visit in village
A large crowd was in attendance
on Friday evening in the Women's
Institute Hall for the annual
Sunday school concert sponsored
by Knox United Church, Belgrave.
Rev. John G. Roberts acted as
master of ceremonies.
The Junior Sunday School choir
opened the program with two
songs. Each class from beginners
to seniors presented either skits or
songs describing the Christmas
stories. Jayne Vincent gave a
recitation. Ian Morton sang a solo
and Ross Procter read a poem

ing tapers, poinsettias and a tree

shiny baubles revived the Christ-
mas spirit in the large congrega-
tion which attended the Carol
service in Knox United Church,
Belgrave, December 24.
The opening sentences and
prayer were by Rev. John G.
Roberts. The processional hymn,

much.
He wonders if people realize how
much freedom they have lost in the
last 30 years. "This worries me
more than anything". We no
longer know when somebody is
doing something to us, such as
assessing. Back in the 1950's when
we had our own assessor he came
right in the house and had a chat
with that farmer. Of course he
knew from the year before if the
farmer had done, any fixing and
generally the farmer would tell him
'I did this or that'. When the
assessor left, generally he was
happy. He reported back to council
and said what was going on. He'd
been in every home and he knew if a
person had a dog."
Today the assessors don't do
anything about dogs so someone
has to be hired to count the dogs.
"It's costing us almost as much to

Lewis Cook. A few members of the
Youth Group presented their own
redition of our church annual
meeting. •
Clifford Coultes and company
held an auction sale of much
needed items for around the house.
The Senior Sunday School Choir
closed the program with three

sung. Scripture lessons were read
from Isaah 40: 1-11; Luke 2:1.16;
and John 3: 10-21.
Mrs. George Procter, organist,
accompanied the senior choir for
their anthem: "Shepherds Shake
of your Drowsy Sleep" and the
junior choir as they sang "welcome
the Babe". The combined choirs
sang "Carol Sweetly Carol."
Rev. Roberts spoke briefly on

count the dogs today as it was to do
the assessing 20 years ago."
With all the money spent on
assessing, he says, there were
more mistakes on the voters list at
the last election that weren't there
in the days when a local assessor
handled the job. He doesn't blame
the people doing the job today but
blames the system and thinks
many of the assessors themselves
may be frustrated by that system.
The present assessing system
depends on building permits to
alert assessors that changes have
been made in a property but Morris
hasn't gone to building permits
because that would also mean a
building inspector who has to be
more and more qualified these
days to be able to interpret the
building codes. "I was always
under the impression that if
someone was smart enough to be
abletoearn the money to build a
