CKNX, CFPL plan
to go independent of CBC
CKNX Television and its sister
station CFPL in London have plans
to become independent stations by
1987 unless a Canadian Radio and
Telecommunications decision
scuttles the idea.
The plans were revealed by Bob

Nearly half of the 1985-88 Huron
County council is made up of new
faces as 15 new members took the
oath of office Tuesday before
District Judge Francis B. Carter in
the council chambers at the court
house in Goderich.
Taking their seats as new
members of council were:
Clinton Credit
Union appoints
directors
Doug Cantelon was elected to
the Credit Cominittee at the annual
meeting of Clinton Community
Credit Union 270.
After almost 24 years on this
committee Gerald Holmes, in
declining to run for another three
year term, stated his many years
serving the Credit Committee in
this capacity had been most
rewarding.
Cliff Parker was returned for
another term filling the two
positions on the Credit Committee.
Tom Eadie and Ray Garon were
re-elected tothe Board of Directors
for a three year term.
James Schnaar of Ward Mallette
Chartered Accountants reported
that a dividend of seven percent
was paid on share accounts this
year and $2,714,222.00 was paid
back to members as dividends and
interest. Mr. Schnaar stated that
Clinton Community Credit Union
would have paid a 10 percent
dividend but because of new
regulations owing to problems,
especially the two recent bank
failures, more funds have to be set
aside as reserves. Two bankrupt-
cies did not help Clinton Commun-
ity Credit Union and these were not
caused because of high cost land
purchases when interest rates
were high. Over 1900 loans for a
dollar value of $12,955,879. were
processed, with first mortgage
loans on real estate increasing the
most. The loan department is
finding that more restrictions and
security on their loans is required.
The day of the hand shake to bind
an agreement is gone.
Members learned that the num-
ber of new accounts and assets had
increased dramatically during the
past three months to total over
9,000 members and $35,000,000.

stations plan to drop their affili-
ation with the Canadian Broad-
casting Corporation after eight
years of negotiating with CBC to
find an "accommodation". CBC
has now agreed to support the
disaffiliation.
But, Elsden said, the move could
be endangered by a proposal by
CITY-TV in Toronto to erect a
repeater station that would beam
its signal into London and com-
munities to slightly north of
Seaforth. Eldsen claimed this
would cost CFPL $2 million in lost
advertising but Moses Znaimer for
CITY-TV claimed there would be
no loss.
CBC will replace the local
stations with a repeater station of
its own beaming its CBLT Toronto
signal into the local area. This
could also be affected if CITY-TV
gets a strong signal first.
Elsden said the disaffiliation
was necessary because of the
declining audience for CBC pro-
gramming.
