Old Brussels rivals still active in hockey
The W.O.A.A. Intermediate
Hockey Season is in full swing for
1985-86 and while Brussels has
been without intermediate hockey
for five years, many familiar names
remain.
To the East are two old rivals of
Brussels, the Monkton Wildcats
(yes folks they still play at the
fabulous forum) and the Drayton
Comets. Steve Elliott and Trent
Bowman lead the Monkton attack.
Also in the East are the St.
Clements Saints and the Milverton
Four-Wheel Drives.
Milverton has signed ex-Brus-
sels Juniors Ron Bowman, Jeff
Buchanan, Jamie Dewar and
Roger Carter.
To the north are the Lions Head
North Stars, Woodford Royals,
Tara Cyclones and the Durham
72's. Woodford, last years grand
champions, are the league's answ-
er to the Edmonton Oilers. Their
1985 stats show a 37-9-1 record
with 407 goals scored. Brussels
fans will remember Wes Rydall of
Lions Head. Rydall was a defensive
standout in the 1980 grand cham-
pionship series against the Inter-
national Bulls. Durham has signed
ex-Markdale juniors Marty Well-
wood and Todd Stoddart.
The central division includes
Ripley, Lucknow Sepoys, Mildmay
Monarchs, Teeswater Falcons,
Kincardine Kings and the Wing-
ham Royals.
Ripley's Brent Armstrong con-
tinues to be one of the league's
premier players, landing Ripley to
four international champion-
ships in the last five years as well as
Rev. Robin Lyons welcomed all
to the third Sunday of Advent
service at St. John's Church,
Brussels on Sunday and had the
Sunday School classes come for-
ward. He explained the faith of the
Virgin Mary, and had Jake Zettel
light the rose candle in the Advent
Wreath.
Rev. Lyons spoke on the history
leading up to the birth of Christ, a
loving God and the love of Christ
celebrated at Christmas time.
He announced Pageant rehears-
al would be Wednesday at 7:30 pm.
The A.C. W. will meet at Bev.
Cardiff's with guest speaker Don-
na Lowes. Next Sunday at 11:30
a.m. will be the Christmas Pageant
two grand championships. Arm-
strong has accomplished this
despite having sight in only one
eye.
The Wingham Royals are again
led by the Brussels Brigade of Dave
Stephenson, Brian TenPas, Ken
Higgins, and Ken Cousins. Ken
Cousins is set to defend his 1985
scoring championship. Former
with a pot luck luncheon afterward.
Next Sunday evening, will be
Advent Carol and Lesson Service at
8 p.m. The Christmas Eve service
7:00 p.m. with family Eucharist.
Cheerio Club meets
The Christmas meeting of the
Cheerio Club was held December
10 catered to a noon meal at
Grandview Lunch in Blyth.
All enjoyed the meal after which
they showed their appreciation
with thanks. June Fothergill was
master of ceremonies for the
meeting. A card of thanks was
received from Rosemary Arm-
strong for a donation to the Huron
Day Centre.
Brussels Int. players Randy Clarke
and Kevin Hastie have also donned
the blue and gold for the upcoming
season. Bernie Haines returns
from the OHA ranks to solidify the
defence while Dave Golley, the last
original Royal, returns for his
eighth year.
This year the WOAA has
expanded to four divisions (Int. A,
B. C, and D) for playoffs. The four
winners will then meet for a grand
championship. Wingham, winners
in 1984, willface Teeswater and
Kincardine for the Int. "B"
championship.
