THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 18, 1985. PAGE 17.
The sanctuary of Knox United
Church, Belgrave was beautifully
decorated on Sunday with colour-
ful poinsettias, a tree aglow and
lighted tapers in the candelabra for
the White Gift service which
coincided with Children's Sunday.
An organ prelude of Christmas
music was presented by Mrs.
George Procter.
The Call to Worship and Prayer
of Approach were given by William
Coultes, Superintendent of the
Sunday Schools. The scripture
readings Luke 1: 5-20 and 5-7-66
were given in dialogue form by
Heather Hopper and Tom Cull
followed by all reading a prayer in
unison.
The children's choir sang,
"Jesus keeps coming once and for
all."
The White Envelope contribu-
tions were collected in two wicker
baskets by Christopher Campbell
an Dean Vincent; the regular
offering by Chris McIntosh, Robert
Gordon, Kate Procter and Ruth
Higgins.
Mr. Coultes gave a short report
concerning the foster child. The
ten year old boy's father is dead.
His family, a sister and brother,
live under primitive conditions
with their grandmother and uncle.
Their livelihood is obtained by
raising poultry and vegetables. His
support requires $276. The money
is widely spent installing a family
privy, repairing walls, aiding the
grandmother in health welfare and
in his Scout training. The boy

The December meeting of the
Belgrave W.M.S. was held at the
home of Mrs. Ivy Cloakey on
Monday, December 9.
Mrs. Mac Scott presided and
opened with the Call to Worship
and followed the Christmas service
in a Glad Tidings. "Away in a
Manger" was sung. The Scripture
reading from Luke 2 was read by
Mrs. Cloakey. "Holy Night,
Peaceful Night" was sung.
Mrs. Scott read a scripture
passage. Mrs. Garner Nicholson
led in prayer. "All Hail the Power
of Jesus' name" was sung.
The secretary's report was given
by Mrs. Robena McBurney and
Mrs. Agnes Youngblutgave the
treasurer's report. The pro-
gramme committee was named:
Mrs. Nicholson and Mrs. Cloakey.
Roll call was answered with a
Christmas verse. Each person
resides in the Philippine Islands
where typhoons occur frequently.
The choir and toddlers of the
congregation occupied the central
front pews while Rev. John G.
Roberts delivered the message.
Mr. Roberts asked "Will the Sun
Rise to-morrow? Is there any place
where it doesn't rise."
The children learned that
beyond the Arctic circle the light of
the sun is reflected for two hours
daily from late November until the
third week ofJanuary. Residents in
some Norwegian cities live in a
period of darkness which creates
several problems:
1. Difficulty finding their way
around.
2. Regular hours for sleeping
proved difficult.
3. Irregular sleeping hours
result in health problems.
4. Feelings of depression and
fear develop.
Light is important in northern
Norway. Alighted candle in a home
window is of significance. Waiting,
hoping and lights are significant
with Christmas. Jesus keeps com-
ing once and for all. The light of
understanding is not necessarily
brought by Christmas.
St. Luke says "Be ready for
action; keep your lights ready.
Wait; but be ready for Jesus'
coming.
Appropriate hymns were sung
during the service which was
concluded by the choir singing the
benediction.
present read a poem or Christmas
Story.
