Blyth Novices win. Tryhards coming
BY RUSTY BLADES
Last Wednesday, December 11
Brussels came to town and some
third period heroics by the Blyth
team sent them home with a 3 - 1
defeat.
Blyth opened the scoring after 45
seconds had elapsed in the game
due to some fine passing. Mike
Bromley took a shot that went wide
of the net, bounced off the end
boards to Christopher Howson who
was positioned at the corner of the
net. As the Brussels goalie slid
across the crease towards him,
Christopher sent a goalmouth pass
through the crease to Henry Bos
who easily scored into the vacated
net.
Brussels tied the score 1 - 1
before the first period ended and
the two teams played through a
scoreless second period. Previous
games saw Blyth squander leads
and lose games in the third period
but Blyth was determined this
would not happen again.
Less than a minute into the third
period Mike Bromley, put a wrist
shot through the goalie's legs to
give Blyth a 2 - 1 lead with assists
going to linemates Henry Bos and
Jerrod Button. Six minutes later
Mike scored his second goal of the
game from a scramble in front of
the net with James McNichol and
Henry "The Scoring Machine"
Bos coming up with assists.
The game ended 3 - 1 for Blyth,
thanks to some fine skating,
checking and great goaltending
throughout the game. Goalie Josh
Yanchus deserves special mention
as he continually turned back shot
after shot and completely frustrat-
ed the Brussels squad with his
stellar performance.
Thanks to Manager Paul Yan-
chus for the refreshments after the
game.
Saturday, December 14 had
Blyth visiting Huron Park for an
afternoon contest. Although thor-
oughly outplayed by Huron Park.
Blyth came home with a 3 - 2 victory
thanks to another hattrick from
sharp shooting centreman Mike
Bromley.
Blyth continually had to fight
back for the win as Huron Park
outskated and outworked them in
this contest. Huron Park scored the
first goal of the game in the first
period but Blyth tied the game in
the second period as Mike Bromley
scored his first goal of the game
with a fine lead pass coming from
defenceman Peter Craig.
Huron Park then took a 2-1 lead
with less than five minutes left in
the game and it looked as if they
would win the game but Blyth
battled back and pulled a couple of
rabbits out of a hat. With two
minutes and 44 seconds left Mike
Bromley once again tied the game
thanks to a nice pass from
defenceman Jamie Bromley.
The "Mike Bromley Show" was
completed with 25 seconds left in
the game as he scored the winning
goal with the help of some pinpoint
passing from linemates Jerrod
Button and Ryan Chamney.
Although this game could not be
described as a masterpiece, it was
another victory although a mix-up
in communications failed to turn up
any post game drinks. Any parent
wishing to contribute to this
program need just tell the coaches
before the game. Next scheduled
game is Friday, December 20 at
6:30 in Milverton.
On Saturday, January 11 the
CKNX Try Hards are making a stop
in Blyth for a charity hockey game
and a night of family entertain-
ment.
Initially, they wanted to chal-
lenge the novice team but it was
decided that this game would
probably be a blow out so, to give
CKNX a chance for a victory, they
will play the Blyth Oldtimers
instead. It seems this reporter is
gaining notoriety in the Blyth area
for his hockey expertise and area
sport fans are demanding his
presence on the ice in this contest
to show off his abilities.
I will probably suit up for the
oldtimers (although lam quite a bit
underage) against this team of
misfits so all of you can aquaint
youself with me. My blades are a
little rusty and I have gained a few
pounds since I last played but, if I
write up the game report, I am sure
there will still be some fantastic
moves left in this aging body. Don't
forget to mark down Saturday,
January 11 on your calendar and be
sure to come out and support this
fund raiser for Blyth Minor Sports.
P.S. Bring your favourite copy of
"The Citizen" to the game so I can
personally autograph it between
periods and after the game.
