Brussels sports beat
Big Sunday for Kevin Ruttan and 'Bulls'

The Junior's travelled to Tavi-
stock Friday to play the Braves,
with only nine skaters after exams,
sickness and injuries had taken
their toll. Tavistock took the lead in
the first period scoring two goals
while Jim Bender scored the only
Bull's goal of the period.
Tavistock added to their lead in
the second period adding two more
goals to take a 4 - 1 lead.
Brussels came back in the third
to add three goals but Tavistock
managed one more to win the game
by a 5-4 score. Brussels goals were
scored by Rob Cardiff assisted by
Murray Dewar and Rollie Smith;
David Schmidt assisted by Mike
Vincent and Mike Chapman; Mike
Vincent assisted by Mike Chap-
man and Marty Rutledge.
Sunday found Brussels at home
to the Thamesford Trojans in a
game that found Kevin Ruttan in
the right spot at the right time. He
opened the scoring for Brussels
getting the first two goals of the
game. Murray Dewar picked up an
assist on the first goal with Rollie
Smith getting an assist on the
second.
Thamesford got their first goal of
the period before Ruttan assisted
by Todd MacDonald got his third of
the period.
Thamesford came out strong in
the second period scoring two
goals before Brussels got their only
goal of the period. Ruttan assisted
by Murray Dewar and Kevin
McArter got credit for the goal.
The Trojans added three unan-
swered goals to take the lead and
end the period at 6 - 4 in
Thamesford's favour.
Brussels came back in the third
period to score two goals and hang
on to the tie. Kevin Wheeler
assisted by Paul Coultes got the
first goal, while Ruttan assisted by
Dewar and R. Smith got the
second.
Mike Smith replaced Jeff Mc-
Gavin in the net for the third period
after Jeff had been taken heavily
into the goal posts during the
second period.
Brussels will be on the road
Friday night for an 8:30 game in
Tavistock and at home to the
Seaforth Centennaires on Sunday
at 2p.m.
The Peewee "A" team was in
Exeter on a foggy Tuesday evening
where they picked up a 9-1 victory.
Scott Bremner came through with
the hat-trick. Darren Johnston and
Steve Fritz added two each with
Greg Wheeler and Brian McArter
scored singles. Assists went to
Greg Mulvey, Dan Beuerman,
Greg Wheeler, Brian McArter,
Steve Fritz, Scott Bremner.
Goalie Neil Pipe lost his shut-out
in the last minute of the game.
The midgets were out of town on
Tuesday night also, travelling to
Teeswater to play hockey. At the
end of the second period Brussels
was losing by a 7-2 score. Dean
Wheeler assisted by Marty Rut-
ledge and Sean Kieffer and then
Kieffer assisted by Paul Koetsier
got credit for those two goals.
Brussels came back strong in the
third period to score five unan-
swered goals and tie the game at 7.
Marty Rutledge scored two of
those goals with Sean Kieffer,
Dean Wheeler and Paul Coultes
getting singles. Assists went to
Shawn Bremner, Rob Ricker, Sean
Kieffer, Dean Wheeler, and Marty
Rutledge.
Sunday's game at Lucknow was
cancelled because of the weather.
The Bantams were athome on
Wednesday night to Elma-Logan.
Brian Alcock assisted by Jeff Earl
and Dean Nicholson scored the
only goal of the first period.
Elma-Logan's Buchanan assist-
ed by Thompson scored the only
goal of the second period to tie the
game. The third period saw Allan
Thompson from Alex Thompson
and Kevin Davey put Elma-Logan
in the lead.
Brussels' Bruce Johnston assist-
ed by Dean Nicholson and Mike
Fraser tied the score once more.
Elma-Logan's Alex Thompson a-
ssisted by Dwayne Nichols put
them in the lead once more. Dean
Nicholson assisted by Bruce John-
ston came through for Brussels to
tie the game at three and finish it
that way.
The Novice team played their
only game of the week on
Wednesday night in Blyth. They
were defeated 3 - 1 by the home
team. Matt Lee scored the only
Brussels goal unassisted.
The Peewee "B" team played
two games at home this week.
Friday night saw Hanover in town.
Brussels defeated them 4 - 3. Steve
McCutcheon scored three of the
goals with Jason Cooper getting
the single. Cooper picked up two
assists and Brian Alexander a
single.
Durham was in town on
Saturday morning to play hockey in
the blustery weather. The visitors
defeated Brusssels 5 - 3. Jason
Cooper scored two of the Brussels
goals with Rob Veitch and Steve
McCutcheon getting assists on the
first goal and McCutcheon and
Kevin Alcock on the second goal.
He then assisted Steve McCut-
cheon on the final goal.
The Peewee "A" team was at
home to Blyth on Saturday after-
noon. They defeated the visitors 4 -
0. Scott Bremner assisted by Jason
Cooper and Greg Wheeler connec-
ted for the first goal. Greg Mulvey
assisted by Neil Pipe and Danny
Beuerman got the second. Neil
Pipe assisted by Darren Johnston
and Scott Bremner got the third.
Darren Johnston assisted by Coop-
er and Beuerman got the final.
Todd Rice got the shut-out in nets.
The Atoms were at home to
Teeswater on Friday night for an
exhibition game. A good close
game of hockey was played with
Brussels coming out on top by a 2 -1
score. Todd Machan and David
Jacklin got credit for the goals.
The Atoms travelled to Clinton
on Saturday for an even closer
game of hockey. It ended in a 1 - 1
tie. David Jacklin got the only goal
of the game with assists coming
from Greg Fritz and Michelle
Machan.
