Brussels UCW holds
Christmas meeting Christmas Gifts
hL
A large number of ladies turned
out to enjoy the christmas meeting
of the Brussels United Church
Women, held in the basement of
the church in the form of a "Pot
Luck" dinner.
As usual it was a problem to find
enough room on your plate to hold
samples of the many delectable
dishes available. Pastor Doug Zehr
said the grace before the meal
began.
A native of Morris Township and
a man who farmed all his adult life
in the area, James Clarence
Johnston of RR 2, Bluevale, passed
away Sunday, November 24, at
Wingham and District Hospital.
He was 78 years of age and death
followed a brief illness.
Mr. Johnston was born in Morris
on September 18, 1907, a son of the
late John Johnston and Elizabeth
Stroud. He had been living retired
for only a few months. He was a
member of the Bluevale United
Church and the Independent Order
of Oddfellows.
In 1936 he married the former
Anna Dobie in Blyth, who survives
to mourn his passing. He was
father of Mrs. Ron (Kay) McIntosh
of Brucefield and Mrs. Arnold
(Verna) Taylor of Wingham) broth-
er of Mrs. William (Verna) Bishop
of Ethel and Mrs. Charles (Laura)
Souch, Wingham. There are 11
grandchildren. He was predeceas-
ed by three sisters and two
brothers.
Friends paid their respects at
The McBurney Funeral Home,
While the tables were being
cleared Betty Campbell and Larke
McDonald led a sing-song of
christmas carols. Larke then wel-
comed everyone and introduced
the special guests, Pastor Doug
Zehr and his wife Mariane, and
Margaret Whitmore and her child-
ren Melissa and Brent.
The meeting opened with a
reading, "The Innkeeper Makes
Excuses" read by Jeanette Boyn-
Wingham, where Mr. Johnston
rested until Tuesday, November
26, when service was conducted at
one o'clock by Rev. Bonnie Lam-
ble. He was carried to his final
resting place in Wingham Ceme-
tery by Bill Peacock, Carl John-
ston, Flemming Johnston, Bill
Souch, Clarence Bishop and Bill
Wheeler. Flower bearers were Gail
and Elizabeth McIntosh, Janette
and Joanne Taylor.
ton, followed by the carol "Away in
a Manger". Betty and Julie
Campbell sang "White Christ-
mas" followed by thecarol "Oh
Come All Ye Faithful."
Melissa and Brent Whitmore
then played a medley of pieces on
their violins. They were accompan-
ied by their mother.
Jean Bridge led in prayer.
Doug and Mirian then asked us
to share a meditation with them, a
satirical take7off on Jesus coming
to earth, discussed by two angels.
Marg Whitmore continued the
theme of the meeting by singing a
beautiful song called, "No Room".
The evening's message was given
by Doug Zehr. He talked of making
more room in our lives for Jesus
this Christmas and not crowding
him out with the material side of
Christmas. Marg Whitmore then
favoured us with "0 Holy Night"
accompanied by Karen Cardiff.
Jeanette Boynton closed the
meeting with a Christmas medita-
tion asking that everyone realize
the full meaning of God's gift in
Christ and that with the eagerness
of little children, everyone remove
the external wrappings of Christ-
mas and appropriate the real Gift of
God's love.
