on behalf of the Brussels Lions
Club and the Easter Seal Society on
Saturday, Dec. 14 of presenting
Bill and Valerie Shortreed of
Taxes
Continued from Pg. 1
ments had been raised at the
ratepayers meeting in November
and since then councillors and the
town office staff had been ques-
tioning taxpayers to see which they
preferred, the old system of paying
twice a year or the new one of four,
smaller payments. The feeling on
the part of most people questioned
seemed to be they'd prefer a
smaller tax bite at a time.
Councillors considered the extra
cost of the new system versus the
saving in interest. At present, the
County of Huron and Huron Board
of Education bill the village
quarterly and if the village doesn't
have the money available because
it hasn't collected taxes yet, it must
borrow the money.
In a related decision, councillors
decided to put the cost of garbage
collection back on the tax bill,
rather than having the Public
Utilities Commission bill it month-
ly. Clerk Stuart Parker noted that
the Ontario Hydro supervisors of
the PUC had been asking that the
PUC charge the town 50 cents per
bill per month to collect the charge.
The reason for having the P.U.C.
collect the charge was a cashflow
problem: the garbage fee built up
over six months until the first tax
installment is due. With quarterly
installments, it was felt the
cashflow problem would not be
severe.
Councillor Malcolm Jacobs sup-
ported the move saying he would
never agree to paying the PUC a
charge to collect the garbage fee.
