Blyth Novices have busy week
BY RUSTY BLADES
Wednesday, November 27 saw
the host Blyth novice team lose
another heartbreaker as the visit-
ing Milverton team turned on the
jets in the third period and skated
away with a 7 - 4 victory.
Brian "Big B" McNichol opened
the scoring for Blyth in the first
minute of the game as he easily
redirected a picture perfect pass
from cousin James into the net.
Less than a minute later Milverton
tied the score and the first period
ended 1 - 1.
Blyth took control of the game in
the second period as they outscor-
ed Milverton 3 - 1. Not to be
outscored by cousin Brian, James
McNichol gave Blyth the lead as
Shawn Hakkers laid a fine pass on
his stick at the corner of the net and
the red light shone. The light didn't
get a chance to cool down as only 24
seconds elapsed before Jonathan
Collins took a rebound of a Jerrod
Button shot and deposited it
behind the Milverton goalie. Five
minutes later, Jerrod Button hit
the twine as, for the second game in
a row, Peter Craig made an
outstanding centering pass to the
front of the net to Jerrod who easily
put Blyth up 4 -1. Milverton scored
the final goal of the period to put
the score at 4 - 2 for Blyth after two
periods.
Coach Chamney and his players
must have started believing their
press clippings and figured they
were unbeatable. Blyth came out
flat in the third period and
Milverton scored five unanswered
goals and totally dominated Blyth
to steal the victory. Two periods of
hockey do not make a complete
game as the team quickly found out
but experience is a great teacher
and I'm sure the next game will be
different.
TOURNAMENT TIME
The team travelled to the
Seaforth Novice Tournament last
Friday and in their first game came
up with a great effort to defeat
Mitchell 6 - 2.
Blyth lit up the scoreboard first
as smooth-skating Ryan Chamney
notched his first goal of the year
with well-deserved assists from
James McNichol and Peter Craig.
Peter Craig then assisted on Mike
Bromley's first goal of the game to
put Blyth up 2 - 0.
Mitchell scored before the first
period ended and then tied the
game in the second period. This
seemed to wake the team up and in
the next 64 seconds Mike Bromley
scored two goals for his hat trick,
with one assist going to Henry Bos.
Blyth ended the second period with
a 4 - 2 lead. Blyth scored two more
goals in the third period and skated
away with a 6 - 2 victory.
Mike Bromley scored his fourth
goal of the game with assists
belonging to Benje Hakkers and
Peter Craig. Finally, in the last
minute of the game, defenceman
Peter Craig scored an unassisted
goal with dekes and fakes remini-
scent of No. 4 of years gone by.
Everyone on the team skated and
forechecked well and, with a little
luck and a better scoring touch
around the net, every member of
the team could have lit the red light
up. Thanks to Coach Bromley for
solving the problem of thirsty
players after the game.
Saturday afternoon saw Blyth
matched up again - Milverton
again - remember them? After a
scoreless first period, Milverton
took the lead and the second period
ended with the score, Milverton 1,
Blyth 0.
This set the stage for a wild,
see-saw battle in the third period
which will be remembered for a
long, long time. Seven goals were
scored with six goals coming in four
and a half minutes. Blyth tied the
game as Jerrod Button scored with
linemates Henry Bos and Mike
Bromley assisting.
Milverton took the lead again
but from the ensuring faceoff at
centre ice Mike Bromley took the
puck and skated straight down the
ice to quickly tie the game once
again. One minute later, Peter
Craig gave Blyth its only lead of the
game with James McNichol gett-
ing the assist.
The team couldn't hold the lead
and the one man Milverton team
scored two quick goals to take a 4 - 3
lead with four minutes to go in the
game.
With chants of "Go Blyth Go"
emanating from the excited crowd
and goalie Josh Yanchus on the
bench for an extra attacker, Blyth
put up a determined effort to tie the
game and force overtime but
Milverton scored an empty net goal
as the final buzzer sounded. Final
score: Milverton 5, Blyth 3.
Although the outcome remained
the same as Wednesday, it was a
more determined and gusty effort
by the Blyth squad which caused
this game to be totally entertaining
from start to finish. Proud coaches,
fans and parents could be seen
everywhere after the game as the
kids played their hearts out. This
enjoyable tournament ended for
Blyth with hats, hot dogs and
cupcakes for all concerned. Thanks
for the great game kids!!!
Next game is in Blyth on
Wednesday, December 4 at 7
o'clock against Seaforth.
