PAGE 20. THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, DECEMBER 4, 1985. BrusselsJuniors beat Howick, Tavistock on weekend BY LOIS McCARTER The Brussels Junior "D" Bulls were at home this weekend for both their games. The Howick Optimists Juniors were in town on Friday night. They started out strong scoring the first two goals before Kevin McArter assisted by Todd MacDonald and Troy Smith got Brussels' first goal. Howick added one more and Brussels' Troy Smith assisted by Kevin McArter managed one more before the period ended 3 - 2 in favour of Howick. Howick quickly added one more goal starting the second period, before Brussels rebounded to add three goals to tie the score and then take the lead. Troy Smith scored all three goals with Todd MacDonald getting an assist on the first goal; Kevin McArter andTim Fritz on the second and McArter on the third. The period ended 5 - 4 in Brussels' favour. Brussels cameback strong in the third to add three more straight goals before Howick got their only goal of the period. Murray Dewar, Jim Bender and Marty Rutledge scored the Brussels goals with an assist going to Rollie Smith on the first and Mike Vincent on the second. Steve Couites went the distance in the Brussels nets for the 8 - 4 victory. The Juniors were at home to the visiting Tavistock Braves on Sun- day afternoon. A quick clean period of hockey found only one goal being scored by the home team. Brussels' Troy Smith assist- ed by Rob Cardiff and Marty Rutledge got credit for that goal. The Tavistock team came out strong in the second period scoring two quick goals to take the lead. Rob Campbell assisted by Jim Bender and Mike Vincent clicked to score the tying goal before the period ended. Tavistock came out to score the go-ahead goal once more in the third, but Brussels rallied back to score three unanswered goals. Kevin McArter assisted by Marty Rutledge and Rob Cardiff got the tying goal. Tim Fritz assisted by Murray Dewar and Kevin Ruttan put the home team ahead. Troy Smith and Kevin McArter got the insurance marker to end the game at 5 -3 in Brussels' favour. It was a much more enjoyable game of hockey to watch than the first game of the season against the same visitors. Jeff McGavin made some excellent saves in the net for the home team. The Bulls will be on the road next Saturday night for an 8:30 game in Thedford and on Sunday will be at home to the visiting Belmont Bombers fora 2 p.m. start. See you there. MINOR SPORTS Wednesday night had two teams playing at home and two on the road. The Bantams were hosting Wingham whom they defeated 8 - 2. Dean Nicholson, Johnathan Van Kuelen and Rodney Nicholson scored two goals each for Brussels with singles going to Ian Johnston and Brian Alcock. Assists went to Jeff Earl, Steve Wheeler, Rodney Nicholson, Brian Alcock, Bruce Johnston, Dean Nicholson. The Midgets were at home to Howick in the second game of the night. They came through with a 3 - I victory over the visitors. Dean Wheeler assisted by Sean Kieffer and Paul Coultes scored the first goal. Dean Lawrie assisted by Marty Rutledge and Andy Nethery added the second. The third goal came from Marty Rutledge assist- ed by Dean Lawrie and Wayne Wheeler. They will be at home for games on Tuesday and Wednes- day night this week. The Atoms and Peewee A teams travelled to Hensall on Wednesday for two short games of hockey. The Atoms played three, 10-minute periods of hockey and the battle was tied at 4 - 4 until the last two minute.; of the game when some- thing went wrong and Hensall scored three goals to win the game 7-4. Brussels goals were scored by Todd Machan, Grant Martin, Brett Lee and the tying goal by Todd Machan assisted by Grant Martin. The Peewee A's followed this game playing two, 10-minute periods and one of 15. Hensall scored the first goal but Greg Mulvey assisted by Scott Bremner and Darren Johnston tied the score to end the first period. Brussels' Steve Fritz scored two goals in the second to give the visitors the lead. His first goal was assisted by Scott Bremner and his second was assisted by Jamie Nicholson and Dan Beuerman. Scott Bemner scored the only goal in the third period to end the game at 4 - 1 for Brussels. The Bantams were in Belmore on Thursday night to play hockey and picked up a 5 - 1 victory. Rodney Nicholson led the team with two goals, with singles going to Mike Fraser, Dean Nicholson and Steve Fritz. Assists went to Brian Alcock, Bruce Johnston, Mike Chapman, Ian Johnston, Rodney and Dean Nicholson. SPROUTS WITHERED The Brussels Sprouts invited a team from Blyth over to play an exhibition game on Friday night to tryout their hockey skills. They ended up on the wrong side of a 10 - 1 score for the visitors. Shawn Nicholson scored the only goal for Brussels. Don't be discouraged boys, get in some more practice and try again. The Atoms were at home to a visiting squad from Exeter. Brus- sels with a great team effort won thegame 6 - 4. Brett Lee and David Jacklin took turns scoring and assisting each other on the first four goals with Ross Machan also getting an assist on the fourth goal. Brett Lee scored the fifth goal assisted by Todd Machan and also scored the sixth goal assisted by Michelle Machan. Good Game. Elma-Logan Peewees at Brussels. P.S. - Moms would you check your closets for hockey and ringette sweaters that aren't being used.
