Spiritual health as important as bodily health, minister says BY PASTOR DOUG ZEHR BRUSSELS MENNONITE FELLOWSHIP "We can do without rice. We can do without sleep. But we cannot do without the teaching and discipling programs of Christian broadcasting." This letter of response to a radio broadcast caught my attention. One reason it did was because I try to monitor the work and response of the program of a para-church agency which does similar work as one dimension of our church's international media work. Another reason it caught my attention was because I didn't recognize the spirit of the letter as being very Canadian. Now it wasn'tjustthe rice connection, but rather it had to do with the inner hunger that underlines the written words. Where did the author live? It could hardly have been in rural southwestern Ontario. Nor could it be the large metropolitan horse- shoe. Perhaps it was some north- ern wasteland or other desolate place. Actually the spirtual hunger that these lines represent is hard to find in this land of plenty. We have much of this world's material blessings and yet the complaints of how tough life is are commonplace. Do we really understand what are the essentials of life? Within us there seems to be a drive for more and more, bigger and better. It is truly difficult to be able to divide our true needs from what are simply our wants. I think that it was Thomas Aquinas who said, "Within every soul there is a restless thirst for happiness." But what is it that will make us truly happy? A quick glance through a particular wish book of the season, is a real eye opener, or should I say a pocket book deflator. The price of our 'toys' is shocking. We are so fortunate we have so much, and yet there is so much discontent, boredom, and unhappiness. I would like to be so bold as to suggest that we are actually looking in the wrong places for truly satisfying happiness. The quote response above actually came from China. But no matter where it comes from, it represents a sincere and honest desire to have the restless thirst within quench- ed. Food and sleep are secondary to the great priority of spiritual health. It is interesting, perhaps path- eticly so, that the condition of our spiritual interest is deeply dis- tressing. The temperature of our spiritual interest leaves us cold and lifeless. It is truly not well with our souls. When our spiritual lives are neglected we are not experiencing wholeness. Spiritual wholeness has to do with our relationship to God. It was Jesus who is quoted as saying, "Watch out1 Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; a man's life does not consist in the abundance of his possessions." At the core of our spiritual health is our relationship to Jesus Christ. Faith, hope and love are the three essential ingredients in our rela- tionship to Him. Without faith, spiritual health is impossible. Christian faith is a life-transforming trust in Jesus Christ that we express by taking His invitation seriously and follow- ing Him. Faith is operative or demon- strated through love. It is love which moves the spirit within us to seek the peace and wholeness of others, not only ourselves. When we enjoy spiritual health we will be in loving relationships with others. In order to live in loving relationships with the rest of humanity requires hope. Hope which includes both a dimension of waiting patiently as well as working diligently. We wait on God while we 'live', or better, 'work' in anticipation of God's kingdom of peace and love and justice. Spiritual health is both a gift from God and a discipline to which we commit ourselves. It includes prayer, a commitment to live in Christian community and growth in the grace and knowledge of Jesus Christ. Perhaps it is time for us all to check our spiritual health.
