Automatic swine
feeding system
gets assistance
from EOSA
A Stormont County farmer
improved sow management and
cut labour costs using technology
funded in part by a Canada-Ontario
Eastern Ontario Subsidiary Agree-
ment (EOSA) program.
Jean-Guy Leduc near Crysler
purchased a pneumatic feeding
system for his 200 hog farrow-to-
finish operation. The automatic
system sends 1.9 tonnes of feed
daily from a computerized feed mill
to self-feeders in the barns by a
pressurized stream of air through
narrow galvanized pipe.
The new system has reduced the
number of feedings to one a day
from two, and requires only one
sixth of the labour. This has left
more time to improve sow manage-
ment, particularly in breeding
techniques.
Total cost of the automatic
pneumatic feeding system was
$27,270. Leduc received assist-
ance under the Agricultural Tech-
nology Transfer Program.
This program was funded jointly
by the governments of Canada and
Ontario under the 1979-84 Eastern
Ontario Subsidiary Agreement.
