Brussels sports beat
Juniors rebound twice
BY LOIS McARTER
The Junior "D" hockey club played two very close games of hockey
on the weekend.
They travelled to Clinton on Friday night to play the "Mustangs".
and found themselves with only 10 players and two goalies dressed to
face the opposition. Clinton came out strong and scored two goals early
in the game to take a 2 - 0 lead. Murray Dewar and Kevin McArter
combined to score Brussels' first goal mid-way through the period.
Clinton added one more to close the period at 3 - 1 in their favour even
though Brussels had out-shot them 14 - 8.
Troy Smith was having a good second period of hockey, until he was
taken heavily into the boards and taken off the ice by stretcher and
removed to Clinton Hospital. Rollie Smith assisted by Troy scored
Brussels' second goal early in the second period with Kevin Wheeler
and Troy Smith working together to tie the game at three. Troy was
injuredjust before the period ended. Shots on goal were 10-9 in
Brussels' favour as Clinton kept the pressure on and Jeff MeGavin
kept them shut-out.
Dave Schmidt and Murray Dewar combined to score the only goal of
the third period and clinch the win for Brussels at 4 - 3. We were glad to
learn after the game that Troy had no broken bones but had torn
ligaments in the shoulder which will keep him side-lined for a few
weeks.
BULLS AGAINST SEAFORTH
The Bulls were at home to the visiting Seaforth Centennaires on
Sunday afternoon. The first period was a good fast game of end-to-end
hockey. Brussels picked up a penalty in the last minute of play and
Seaforth scored with only 25 seconds remaining on the clock to take a 1 -
0 lead.
The second period continued to be interesting hockey as the players
banged that little piece of black rubber back and forth from one to
another at a good pace. Tim Fritz who was set up by Kevin Ruttan and
Murray Dewar finally found an opening to tie the score at 1. Just before
the period ended Seaforth scored once more to take a 2 - 1 lead at the
end of the second.
Two very even teams continued play in the third period with
Brussels' Rollie Smith being in the right place at the right time and
streaked down the ice to deek the goalie and tie the game at 2.
The turning point of the game was at 1:42 of the third period when
Seaforth came down the ice on a break-away and Brussels' goalie Mike
Smith stopped them. Kevin Ruttan and Dave Schmidt passed out the
rebound to Murray Dewar who went right back down the ice to score
what proved to be the winning goal. Brussels had out-shot Seaforth 38 -
26 in the game.
When the weekend commenced Brussels was on top of the
standings with Seaforth and Clinton tied for second place. There
should be some good exciting hockey games close to home this winter.
It would be nice to see the same support at the home games the rest of
the winter as was in attenance on Sunday afternoon. Keep up the good
work fellows.
The Bulls willbe playing three games this week. They will be
travelling to Howick on Wednesday night at 9:00 p.m. and will be at
home to Clinton Saturday night at 8:00 p.m. and to Tavistock, Sunday
afternoon at 2:00 p.m. See you there!
MIDGETS START SEASON
Two of the teams in Minor Sports got their seasons underway this
past week.
The midget team travelled to Ayton arena on Wednesday night to
play the Normanby Midgets for their first game of the year. They
picked up a 3 - 0 victory for their efforts. Marty Rutledge assisted by
Dean Lawrie, and Paul Coultes assisted by Sean Kieffer scored two
goals in the first period to take the lead. Dean Wheeler assisted by Paul
Coultes scored the only goal in the third period to end the game at 3 - 0
for Brussels.
The Tri-County Peewee team opened their season at home against
the visiting team from Howick on Friday evening and also picked up
their first win of the season. Jason Cooper assisted by Steve
McCutcheon scored the first goal for Brussels with Steve McCutcheon
from Cooper and Kevin Alcock getting the second goal. Brent Evans
assisted by Rob Veitch scored the third, with Steve McCutcheon from
Brad Taylor getting the final goal to end the game at 4 - 2 in Brussels
favour. Home games for Minor Hockey this .week will be:

TRY-HARDS VISIT
Minor Sports is holding a special event on Saturday, November 16
at 8:00 p.m. when the coaching staff will attempt to play hockey against
the C.K.N.X. Try- Hards in a fun game.
A family dance will be held following the game in the auditorium for
everyone. It should be a fun evening for all ages.
The figure skating club is also holding a dance on November 23 in the
auditorium to the music of "Loose Change". Mark your calendar for
these two events. They'd like to see you there.
Blyth businesses
support sports
The business community of
Blyth. Londesboro and Auburn has
once again come through with
support for the Blyth Figure
Skating and Minor Sports Clubs.
The businesses have purchased
ice time at the arena to help offset
some of the cost of running these
two clubs.
With the price of registration
covering only half of the year's
expenses, the assistance from the
community is very appreciated.
The more than 50 businesses
have their names displayed in a
colourful mural at the arena. The
names will remain there until mid
January.
It is hoped that when you visit the
arena you will take special note of
how our business community
supports its children.
