THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, NOVEMBER 6, 1986. PAGE 19.
Self-help groups for women are
the focus of a project being
sponsored by Women Today. The
Women Being Well project has
already trained nine community
women who wish to establish
support groups. This week eight
more women begin the seven week
course designed by Women Today
staff.
"The course is designed to: give
women confidence in their own
skills and knowledge to increase
awareness of lifestyle choices that
promote health; and to practice
skills associated with working in
groups", said Valerie Bolton,
coordinator of the project. "We
also have the women explore all
resources and services within
Huron County that will support
their volunteer community
efforts".
The course involves a weekend
training session, as well as six
evening sessions. The course is
being taught this fall by family
counsellor and therapist, Nancy
McLeod.
"Unfortunately there are sever-
al women who wanted to take the
course whose family commitments
prevent them fro, : spending a
weekend or even'ngs away from
home", said Bo' 3n.
It is hoped that another group
will be formed which will meet for
eight sessions on Monday after-
noons at the Women Today office.
"We have three women already
who wish to take the Monday
afternoon course" said Sally Rath-
well, project employee. "Those
three women all wish to start
groups for mother's with young
children." she said.
The Monday afternoon course
will go ahead if three more
participants are found. Women
taking the training are given access
to the Women Today library and
files as well as start-up funding to
get their groups established.
Self-help groups are a form of
promoting women's mental and
physical health by giving women
the opportunity to be mutually
supportive of one another.
The project has been funded by
the Health Promotion Directorate
of Health and Welfare Canada. For
more information about the project
