Brussels council meets
Representatives from the muni-
cipal councils of East Wawanosh,
West Wawanosh, Morris and the
villages of Blyth and Brussels were
among those who shoe-horned
themselves into the new emergen-
cy wing of the Wingham and
District Hospital on Saturday for
the building's official opening.
Health Minister and Huron-
Bruce MPP Murray Elston per-
formed the official opening cere-
mony. It was a necessarily-short
ceremony with the normal activi-
ties of the new wing going on
despite the overflow crowd that
packed into the building to escape
the pouring rain outside.
Mr. Elston said that among his
memories of growing up in the area
was a visit to the old emergency
facilities at the hospital to have a
separated shoulder reset.
Mr. Elston said that there is a
huge investment in facilities in the
province, one that has been
estimated to total about $7 billion.
Aninvestmentthisbig, he said,
can only be kept up to date through
a huge commitment from the
communities the new emergency
and ambulatory care wing would
not have been built without a huge
commitment from the community,
the hospital board and the hospital
staff, from doctors and nurses to
candy stripers.
Also present was Gordon Cunn-
ingham, president of the Ontario
Hospital Association who said that
one of the concerns of his
organization is keeping buildings
up to date and adequately equipp-
ed to meet the level of service
people have come to expect from
their health-care facilities.
The provincial and federal
governments, he said, have under-
taken to pay operating costs of
health-care facilities but that
development costs aren't neces-
sarily a government function. One
of the activities of the community,
he said, is to build and rebuild the
facilties.
Assisting in the unveiling of a
new plaque along with Mr. Elston
was Dr. Mel Corrin of Lucknow,
vice-president and secretary-
treasurer of the medical staff and
recently chosen doctor of the year
by the Ontario College of Family
Physicians.
