JOHN ELLIOTT I am a 45 year-old insurance broker, married and residing in the Village of Blyth where I have been in business for 25 years. I have served on the Huron County Board of Education for 11 years during which time I have served as Chairman of the Board and Chairman of all standing committees. I am also the Member for The Huron County Board of Education on the Ontario Public School Trustees Association, serv- ing as Vice-Chairman of Opera- tions Committee and Budget Com- mitee in the past year. The biggest challenge in the upcoming three-years term will be in maintaining the current excel- lent level of educational facilities in the County in the face of the provincial government's decision to extend separate school funding. This will take experience and knowledge of the system to make the most of limited funding resources. In addition the Board has recently entered into an agreement with the Ministry of Correctional Services to operate a secondary school at the Bluewater Centre. This will also take continu- ed planning and co-operation, as do all functions involving the education of our young people. JOHN GAUNT Eduation is an ova that always has and always will interest me. I see it as a process that, historically has changed and must forever The winner of the 1985 "Drink- ing and Driving Must Stop" Writing Contest, sponsored by Young Drivers of Canada and Goodyear Canada Inc. is Caroline Desbiens of Laval, Quebec. The winner receives a scholarship which covers tuition fees at a recognized Canadian university or college for a maximum of three years and a one time cash award of $500 for books. Awards of merit were presented to the winner Caroline Desbiens and both runners up Rene Cox- worthy of St. John's, Newfound- land and Catharine Seniunas of Hamilton. Young Drivers of Canada and Goodyear Canada Inc. are co-oper- ating in an examination of peer pressure and driving behaviour. The topic of the 1986 writing contest has been devised to stimulate thought and provoke discussion on this, subject. A scholarship will be awarded to the author of the best article or short story on the topic "Am I a better driver when my friends aren't around?" continue to change in response to publice demand. With due regard for the basics, which must be carried on, I feel we must continually move ahead. This must be done without ever forgetting the present economic climate. A larger portion of our ratepayers have taken a sizeable cut in pay in recent years. This must be considered when setting budget and when negotiating salaries and wages. "Restraint" and "value for the dollar" are becoming more impor- tant. This cannot be over-empha- sized. I feel there has been a lack of communication between the board of education and the general public. School taxes constitute a large portion of our tax bills. Too many of us don't know how the board is spending our money. I think the board's deliberations should be publicized more inten- sively. I seek to represent the public school supporters in Blyth, Morris and East Wawanosh on the HurOn County Board of Education. lam 42 years old; have been farming full time for 17 years; attended ele- mentary school in East Wawanosh; graduated from Wingham District High School in 1962; graduated from University of Guelph in 1966; was fieldman for O.F.A. for 2 years; was director of Belgrave Credit Union; am a Nuffield Scholar (1973) (6 months study of agriculture in U.K.); councillor of U.C.O. Grey Township FRED UHLER Fred Uhler is a full-time farmer who has lived in Grey Township for 33 years. He graduated from Seaforth District High School and Ridgetown Agricultural School before starting his beef and pig operation. Over the years, he has been involved in the community as a 4-H Club Leader, a director of the Brussels Agricultural Society, a member of St. John's Lodge Brussels and an elder in the Ethel United Church. For the past four years, Fred has been a member of Grey Township Council and knows many of the concerns of the local ratepayers. In those four years the council has dealt with earthen storage manure pits, has passed (at Township level) a comprehensive zoning by-law, and has tried to deal with ratepayers problems in a fair manner. The three main problems facing council at the present time are road maintenance; the management of the waste disposal site; and recreation. Routine maintenance of roads and bridges must be carried out so that costly recon- struction is not needed in the future. Because the Ministry of the Environment sets down the guide- lines for the waste disposal site, residents must co-operate by separating their garbage and following other rules deemed necessary by the Township to keep the Walton site open. Grey Town- ship Council hopes to sign an agreement with Brussels and Morris Township which will help maintain and insure recreational facilities of high quality remain in the area. Fred has found the last four years interesting and challenging and hopes to be able to continue serving the community as a member of Grey Township Coun- cil. RATEPAYERS OF BLYTH, MORRIS & EAST WAWANOSH The next three years will be extremely challengingfor the Huron County Board of Education. -the move toward full funding -the probable further decline in student enrollment -the present dismal economic outlook -the need to improve the quality of education -the increasing salary demands -the need for a better public understanding of what the board is doing These are only a few of the problems. We must exercise restraint and be certain we get full value for every dollar spent in our school system. I ask for your support on November 12.
