The Brussels' Bulls were at home on Tuesday night for one of
their rare mid-week games to the visiting Mitchell Hawks.
The first period was a close well-played period of hockey with
Rob Cardiff scoring the first goal unassisted and Kevin
McArter the second goal assisted by Troy Smith. Mitchell
scored one goal to end the period at 2-1.
The second period saw the home team adding four more
goals while the visitors added one. Kevin McArter scored two
goals with Mike Chapman and Kirk Whitfield getting singles.
Assists went to Todd McDonald, Troy Smith, Dave Schmidt and
Rollie Smith.
The third period had the "Bulls" adding three goals and held
the visitors scoreless to end the game at 9 - 2. Marty Rutledge
picked up two goals and Mike Chapman one for the home team
with assists going to Troy Smith, Whitfield, McDonald,
Rutledge and Cardiff. Jeff McGavin went the distance in the
net.
Friday night found the team boarding the bus shortly after six
to travel to Thamesford to play their first weekend game. After
the long ride the Brussels' squad came out strong scoring four
unanswered goals in the first period. Kevin Ruttan scored two
goals with Rob Cardiff and Murray Dewar adding singles.
Kevin McArter and Rollie Smith picked up two assists each with
singles going to Troy Smith, Dave Schmidt and Murray Dewar.
The second period found the Trojans scoring their first two
goals of the game but Brussels also added three more. Troy
Smith scored two goals and Murray Dewar a single with assists
going to McArter, Fritz, Vincent, R. Smith and Ruttan.
The third period seemed to drag considerably as Murray
Dewar scored from Tim Fritz for the only Brussels goal and
Thamesford added two more to close the game at 8 - 4. Steve
Coultes covered the nets for the Brussels' victory.
A bright sunny Sunday afternoon kept some of the spectators
away as the Bulls played host to the visiting Exeter Hawks. An
enjoyable first period of hockey was played with Mike Vincent
(from Stuart Bowman and Rob Campbell) getting the first
Brussels goal and Kevin McArter (from Troy Smith) getting the
second. Exeter scored their first goal with Tim Fritz and Kevin
Ruttan combining for Brussels third goal.
The second period had Exeter come out strong scoring three
quick goals to suddenly take a 4 - 3 lead in the hockey game.
Brussels defenceman Stuart Bowman found an opening to take
the puck down the ice and score unassisted to tie the game. The
second period came to an end with Fritz and Ruttan combining
to put Brussels back in the lead.
After two good periods of hockey by both teams something
different obviously happened in the third. Exeter didn't appear
to fade away but Brussels came out to score ten unanswered
goals in the period. The goalie must have felt a little
shell-shocked as they were out-shot 51 - 24 in the game.
Kevin Wheeler, back for his first game of the season, found
the slot and scored his hat-trick in the third period. Murray
Dewar added two goals with singles going to Tim Fritz, Stuart
Bowman, Rob Campbell, Rob Cardiff and Troy Smith. Assists
went to Kevin McArter with 6; Troy Smith, 3; Dave Schmidt, 2;
Ruttan, Dewar Cardiff, Fritz and Todd McDonald with singles.
Jeff McGavin played net in the first period with Mike Smith
playing two and three.

Blyth -- 523-4342
All players and fans were glad to see Dean Rutledge back in
the arena as a spectator this week, after being injured in the
Tavistock game last Sunday. He had been heavily
body-checked to the ice and then pounced upon by his
opponent. He had received several blows to the head before the
referees pulled his opponent off. He was removed from the ice
in a dazed condition and taken to Wingham Hospital where he
lost consciousness and was rushed to London Hospital. He was
released on Tuesday with no apparent serious after effects, we
are happy to report.
The Brussels Bulls hockey club consists of the following
players from the Brussels - Blyth - Walton - Moncton area. They

Figure Skating, ringette and minor hockey are slowly getting
into shape with most hockey teams probably playing their first
games early in November. Ringette and minor hockey players
are currently selling chocolate bars to raise money to help pay
for their ice time. If they missed you, they are also available at
Ron's Variety in Brussels. We appreciate your support.
