A new ministry program will pay
80 per cent of farmers' cost for
greater use of soil conservation and
erosion control devices in munici-
pal drains, Agriculture and Food
Minister Jack Riddell announced
recently.
The Ontario Drainage Works
Erosion Control Program will make
$2 million available to municipali-
ies over the next four years to cover
the portion of costs assessed
An eastern Ontario township has
achieved better overall municipal
management using technology
financed by a Canada- Ontario
Eastern Ontario Subsidiary Agree-
ment (EOSA) program.
Kenyon Township in Glengarry
County installed a microcomputer
as a pilot project to see if such a
system could ease the increasing
paperwork of rural municipal
offices for municipal and tile
drainage programs. The project
was also to try and make calcula-
tions much easier on individual
assessments for drain manten-
ance.
The municipal drainage micro-
computer system has been respon-
sible for cutting drainage paper-
work in the township by as much as
90 per cent. By integrating base
drainage maps to scale, the system
has permitted a more accurate and
easier method of recording and
storing all drainage data. More
efficient drain maintenance, pro-
perty assessment and accounting
procedures have resulted.
against agricultural lands for
erosion prevention devices.
"We felt we needed to encour-
age greater erosion control in
municipal drains," said Riddell.
"The normal grants paid to
municipalities for installation costs
will also apply to this program."
The following devices are eligi-
ble under the program:
a drop structures for ditch
bottoms to slow water and reduce
erosion.
Total cost of the system was
$31,500 covered by a grant under
the Agricultural Technology
Transfer Program.
This program was funded jointly
by the governments of Canada and
Ontario under the 1979-84 Eastern
Ontario Subsidiary Agreement.

• drop structures to stabilize
ditch bottoms where drains meet at
different elevations.
• tile drains to intercept water
seeping below ground surface that
could cause slumping of ditch
banks.
• seed and fertilizer for grass
cover on ditch banks and buffer
strips.
• fencing to prevent livestock
access to drains.
To be eligible for the grant, the
specifications for the device or the
application for the materials must
appear in an engineer's report,
which is adopted as a by-law by the
municipality.
