THE CITIZEN, WEDNESDAY, OCTOBER 23, 1985. BY LOISMCARTER "The regular hustle and bustle of winter activities is slowly taking form at the local arena. The Junior "D" hockey club is in full swing having been on the ice since the middle of September. Their schedule commenced one week ago in Seaforth where they came home with a 2 - 2 tie. They played their home opener against Lucan and once more picked up a 6 - 6 tie. This past weekend found the team travelling to Mitchell on Friday night. At the end of the first period, Mitchell was leading 2 - 0 even though Brussels had out-shot them 12 - 6. The Brussels squad came back in the second period to score four unanswered goals. The third period had the Brussels Bulls adding two more goals and the Mitchell Hawks adding one goal for a final score of 6 - 3 in Brussels' favor. Murray Dewar picked up two goals for the night with Kevin Ruttan, Tim Fritz, Kevin McArter and Rollie Smith adding singles. Assists went to Troy Smith, Mike Chapman, Rollie Smith, Kevin Ruttan and Murray Dewar. Jeff McGavin went all the way in net for the Brussels victory. The Bulls were at home to the Tavistock squad on Sunday afternoon at 2 p.m. The first period ended with Brussels leading the visitors 3 - 0. The Tavistock team came back in the second period to keep the home team scoreless and adding two goals to their own score, to close the second period at 3 - 2. The Tavistock team came out strong early in the third period to tie the score in the first minute of play. Kevin McArter came back with two quick goals to give Brussels the lead once more. The home team went on to add two more goals and hold the visitors at three. This 7 - 3 win gave Brussels team two ties and Belgrave recreation budget cost Recreation in Belgrave contin- ues to get along without much support from the tax rolls thanks to the hard work of volunteers Councillor Jim Taylor told a public meeting of East Wawa- nosh taxpayers Oct. 16. Although Morris and East Wawanosh township each con- tribute $500 to recreation in the village, the bulk of revenue comes from events such as the annual turkey supper which this two victories in commencing their league schedule. Marty Souch was in goal for his first victory. Kevin McArter lead the Brussels attack scoring a hat trick (3 goals). Murray Dewar followed with two goals and single goals were added by Tim Fritz and Kevin Ruttan. Troy Smith picked up 3 assists with the others going to Marty Rutledge, Dewar, McArter, Fritz and Ruttan. The Brussels squad will be at home for a rare Tuesday night game against Mitchell. They will be travelling to Tharriesford on Friday for an 8.30 game and will be at home to Exeter on Sunday at 2 p.m. TEAMSSTART PRACTICE The minor hockey teams, along with Ringette, got on the ice for their first practices of the season last week. The coaches travelled to Mitchell last Wednesday evening to draw up the playing schedules which will probably find most teams getting started the first week of November. The Peewee boys ball team passed up their hockey practice on Wednesday night to complete their ball season. The boys were playing Walton for the Tri-County Championship. The best of 5 series found Brussels winning the first game. Walton were victorious in games two and three with Brussels coming back to win the fourth, forcing the fifth and deciding game. This game proved equally as exciting with Walton taking a 2 - 0 lead and Brussels coming back to tie the game at 2. Walton added two more runs to clinch the victory at 4 - 2 and claim the championship trophy. Congratulations to all for some well-played ball. Public skating is held on Saturday and Sunday evenings from 7 - 8.30 p.m. with moms and tots on Thursday mornings from 10 till noon. Come on out and participate, it's healthy exercise. taxpayers very little trict Community Centre Council- lor Vaughn Toll said that unlike Belgrave, Blyth did run at a deficit and East Wawanosh's 17 percent share costs the township about $2200-$2400 a year. The centre had recently installed a heat pump, system and had purchased land at the north side of the building and installed a circular road right around the building for safety's sake but that hopefully there should be no large expenditures in the fore- seeable future, Mr. Toll said. year grossed close to $4000. Councillor Taylor warned, how- ever, that a not-so-rosey picture maybe coming down the road if major repairs are needed to the arena. A report this summer said that repairs to floors and installa- tion of proper hardware on doors and other such things needed to be done before ice went in the arena this winter but more work could be needed to meet major inspections in the future. Arenas Brussels "Bulls" have big weekend now have to undergo major inspections every five years and the community might have to look at big bucks or perhaps even closing down the facility at that time if it fails to meet present standards. Still, he said, he could look around at a lot of communities that don't have facilities any better than Belgrave's that are costing a lot more.
