Mrs. Anna Lee Smith, Cori and
Andy, Milton, spent Thanksgiving
with her parents, Mr. And Mrs.
Stuart Stevenscn.
Mrs. Otta Gensheimer, West
Germany, spent a few days at her
house in the village.
Spending Thanksgiving with Mr.
and Mrs. Harvey Smith were Mr.
and Mrs. Steve Werls and family,
London, Mr. and Mrs. Keith Traves
and family, Listowel, Ken Bast and
children, Woodstock, and Mrs.
Allan Smith, Brussels.
Thanksgiving visitors with Mr.
and Mrs. Bert Van Donkersgoed
were their son Gerald, Vancouver,
daughters Christine, Guelph,
One in five adults in Ontario is
functionally illiterate and to help
narrow the gap and increase com-
munity awareness, the Honorable
Lily Munro, Minister of Citizenship
and Culture, announced a $76,900
program to develop further library
literacy pilot projects.
"Imagine not being able to read a
good novel, or being denied the
pleasure of reading bed time stories
toyour children," Munro said. "We
take reading for granted and it is
unbelievable to think that in today's
high-tech society there exist people
who cannot read."
In January, the Owen Sound
Public Library received a $38,000
grant to develop materials for a
model literacy program. Additional
funding will now enable the develop-

sional teachers as well as promoting
public awareness at the community
level," Munro stated. "Based on
these pilot projects we will develop

to enable local libraries to undertake
literacy programming without dupli-
cation."
The Owen Sound Library has been
working to upgrade and prepare a
how-to manual and a multi-media
bibliography. Presently, there are
10 public libraries in the province
undertaking literacy training pro-
grams.
