Ministry of Transport and Communications; Reeve William Elston;
Councillor Doug Fraser; Deputy Reeve Tom Miller and Councillor
Clement McLellan.
A large crowd turned out Saturday
for the official opening of the new
Morris Township Municipal Office
and Works Garage.
The new building, costing more
than $300,000 replaces the original
township hall built in 1872 for a cost
of $650 and located just east of the
present building on the south side of
County Rd. 16. In his remarks,
Reeve William Elston noted that
some of the people present were
seated on solid pine benches taken
from the old hall which were likely
over 100 years old.
The reeve's son, Ontario Health
Minister Murray Elston, M.P.P.
officially cut the ribbon to open the
building and also unveiled a plaque
along with Thomas Miller, Deputy
Reeve.
In his remarks, Mr. Elston
stressed the importance of commit-
ment to the local political level and
urged people to uphold the process
in the days leading up to the
municipal election.
Vincent,
Snell face
off again
East Wawanosh voters will be on
their way to the polls when election
day, November 12 rolls around, with
races for reeve, council and school
board all to be settled.
Last election's contest between
Neil Vincent and Ernie Snell that
ended in a tie (with Mr. Vincent
eventually winning the post on a
drawing from a hat) will be rerun
again. Mr. Snell told a public
meeting at the East Wawanosh
municipal building October 16 that
although he had been vocal in his
questioning of council at the meeting
he had shaken hands with his
opponent after the last election and
he'd be happy to do so again at the
start of this campaign.
All incumbents, Fred Meier, Don
Schultz, Jim Taylor and Vaughn Toll
will be seeking re-election and will
be joined by Raymond Hallahan,
R.R. 3, Blyth and John A. Currie,
R.R. 3, Wingham.
A battle as the representative for
East Wawanosh, Morris and Blyth
on the county Board of Education is
shaping up between incumbent
John Elliott of Blyth and John Gaunt
of R.R. 1, Belgrave.
There will also be a liquor question
on the ballot as the Belgrave
Kinsmen seek to make the township
"wet" so they can apply for special
occasion permits to provide alcoholic
refreshments at ball tournaments,
etc. in the viEage.
Mr. Miller noted that the new
garage sat on land taken up by his
grandfather in 1852.
Representatives of nearly all
surrounding townships were pre-
sent to extend their congratulations
and were represented on stage by
Kal Krauter, Reeve of Brussels.
Specially recognized by Reeve
Elston were former reeve Bailie
Parrot of Blyth and long-time clerk,
Helen Martin.
The new building has a four-bay
works garage measuring 112 by 52
feet. It also includes a storage area, a
lunch room, kitchenette and rest
room for the road crew and an office
for the road superintendent.
The municipal office area is 54 by
36 feet and contains an office for the
clerk, a council chamber, two vaults,
a private office for consultation, a
small kitchenette, a supply-storage
area and washrooms.
