There will be a new look to
Brussels village council regardless
of the outcome of an election that
sees five people seeking four council
positions.
Councillor Hank Ten Pas will
succeed Kal Krauter as reeve. Of the
rest of the old council, only Betty
Graber and Gordon Workman are
seeking re-election. Opposing them
are Susan Gowing, a leader of the
opposition against picking up the
operating cost of the swimming pool
on the tax bill, Dave Boynton and
Malcolm Jacobs.
The twopositions on the Public
Utilities Commission were filled by
acclamation: Henry F. Exel and
Harold Bridge.
Cake Walk
returns
for 1986
The Blyth Festival's 1984 block-
buster premiere production of Cake-
Walk by Colleen Curran will be back
in 1986, Artistic Director Katherine
Kaszas announced today. Cake-
Walk will open in mid-August as the
final production of the Blyth Festi-
val's 1986 season, and will then goon
tour during September and October.
Described by reviewers as a
"recipe for sheer enjoyment",
"sweet entertainment", "pleasing
concoction", and "has ingredients
for Blyth hit", Cake-Walk was the
top seller of the Festival's 1984
season, averaging over 91 per cent
capacity! The action takes place in a
hotel in a small town, during the
annual Canada Day celebrations.
Five unlikely contestants are
pitted against each ether in the
cake-walk competition - and their
attempts to win., by fair means or
foul, provide the hilariously funny
plot. Cake-Walk went on to be
produced in 1985 at the Kawartha
Summer Festival and was showcas-
ed by the Blyth Festival at the
Ontario Arts Council's Contact 86
last weekend.

BRUSSELS NEWS
People around Brussels
Howard Bernard, Brussels fire chief was honoured with a
medallion for 25 years of service at a Medal Investiture
Ceremony held by the Ontario Fire Marshall's Office at the
Valhalla Inn in Kitchener, October 18.
The ceremony honoured long service by firemen from all over
the province, and was, Mr. and Mrs. Bernard report, a very
impressive event.
Mr. Bernard actually started with the fire department in 1959
but officially joined in 1960. He has been chief for the last five
years. Thankfully, he says, he has never been at a fire that
resulted in a fatality in his quarter century of firefighting.
Mrs. Bernard received a pin and the Chief also received a
framed certificate.
OUR OFFICE IS COMING
The Citizen's new office on Brussels' main street will not be
open for a few weeks yet.
Arrangements have been made to rent an office but we'll be
moving into one that is already occupied. The current
occupantswill be moving to new quarters so we have to wait for
them to get their arrangements there first. In the meantime,
we've arranged for people to drop off material at Maitland
Insurance to be picked up or it can be mailed to us at our
Brussels box #152 or you can call us at 523-4792. Thanks for your
patience.
APPLICATIONS PLENTIFUL FOR NEW GREY CLERK
Grey township council will have plenty of work on its hands in
the coming weeks choosing a replacement for Jane Badley who
moved to Bradford. Council opened applications on Monday
afternoon and more than 20 applications were made. It will be
some time before the decision process can be completed. In the
meantime, Bill King, retired Brussels clerk, is helping out in
Grey.
- SEND US YOUR NEWS
This is the first of what we hope will be an informative column
on the people and events in Brussels. We want to know about
the achievements of people, both those currently living in
Brussels and former residents. We want to know about new
residents in the community and the departure of people who
have been a part of the community. We want to know about
people in general. You can get in touch with us through any of
the above noted methods and keep us informed. The only way
we can keep people informed is if people let us know.
