HESS HOTTER THAN A 'FIRE .RACKERt
Hottest specimen in the WOAA Intermediate
"B" hockey groupingis none other than Mary
,$hantz. Beyond a doubt, the free -wheeling left winger
must be the best Christmasresent Manager C. H.
p la
MacDonald of the Mitchell Red Devils has received
in years. Although Mary
arrived at the Mitchell de-
pot well before St. Nick's
appearance this December,
the fans out Mitchell way
and the club brass should
have a considerably enjoy-_
able Christmas, hockey-.
wise at least.
The way Mary Shantz
has been denting the twine
behind rival netminders
the past p t \week or so., has
the rest of the league in an
uproar. His performance
to date, even though he
may wilt in the stretch,
has been something that
every coach dreams of. in
his first four outings, he
produced the "hat trick"
each time for 12 goals to
start the Red. Devils rolling. This spark wiped out
the opening loss to Clinton, in which he didn't play,
to put the Mitchell six right back into contention
with four wins. He performed his three -goal effort
twice against the Ilderton Wildcats, once at home
and once on the road. Another three -goal splurge
took place against the Irish and his fourth came
ri:ht in the Exeter Mohawk wigwam.
If the suspicion of luck may be resting in
your thoughts on Marv's output for the first four
games, he should have quickly cleared the • illusion
away with his fascinating seven -goal splurge against
the Clinton Colts Tuesday night.
Shantz now has the remarkable sum of 19
goals to his credit in five games. If Mary is on a
bonus deal which involves a 20 -goal season, he could
retire without a worry in the world after this season
if he keeps up his present clip for the balance of the
schedule. His present pace is highly unlikely to re-
main steady, although we wouldn't be surprised' if
he triggered home something around the 40-45 goal
mark before the season ends. Barring injuries, the
Mitchell player could make it very unpleasant for
the rest of the netminders in the league. Just think
how lucky you are, Bruce Chesseli
The goal scoring knack isn't just something
that is handed to a player on a silver platter. In
nine. out of 10 cases, a player has to put hours of
work into shooting practice before he can develop
control of his wrist shot, slap shoot or whatever it
may be. • Mary certainly, h;as this knack. Against the
tribe Friday, we counted at least three of his power-
ful wrist shots bouncing crazily off 'the goalposts.
With the three goals he got, he could just as easily
had six if the breaks had been with him. The next
time the Mitchell Red Devils move into town, keep
your eyes open for the player wearing the No. 10
sweater of the visitors. It would be a Safe bet to
say that he'll provide many thrills around the net
before the night is over:

BOWLING ENJOYED BY HUNDREDS
Exeter Bowling Lanes is one of the busiest
places in town. Every night, Monday through Satur-
day, you can hear the moans and groans of head pin
punchers or the happy rejoicings of the 'strike art-
ists. We understand that in all, 48 teams are en-
gaged in a full men's 'and ladies' schedule over the
winter months.
With Christmas right around the corner, the
local lanes have lined up possibly the biggest bowl-
ing tournament Exeter has ever seen, in the $400
Schenley Open. The tournament, which will take
place Friday and Saturday, December 26 and 27, will
have 48 teams participating in it.
Teams are scheduled to come from Goderich,
Stratford, Kitchener, London, Sarnia, Listowel, Clin-
ton and Exeter to name a few, At the moment, 30
teams have filed entries, With the deadline being
December 15, it would be wise to get your team
entered before the event is filled.
Top team will cart off $150 in prize money
while the second nets $100 and the third $50. The
high single game roller of the tournament will be
given $50 as will the person rolling the best five
games in the two-day affair. Entry fee $1 per per-
son. The tourney should be quite a boom to the
bowling industry In town and it sounds as though it
would be well worth your while to watch some of
the sharp shooters in action. See you there]

layoff Friday night, when they
took advantage of a short-handed
Lucan Irish club to pound out a
decisive 14-5 decision,
The layoff didn't effect the
finese of the Clinton club in the
least, as they, pumped home four
opening period goals, added
four more in the second and then
wrapped things up in fine style
with a six -goal outburst in the
third.
Playing Coach Hen Doig was
the mastermind of the night as
he scored four of the winner's
goals and collected three assists
to hoot.
Linemate Jack Merriam gave
Doig very adequate assistance
in the lopsided affair with three
goals and two assists.
Other Clinton marksmen in -
