BOMBERS RIOHT ON TARGET iN THIS ONE!
It wouldn't surprise us in the least if
the

After the way the Blue Bombers debunked the

a'oa'itxof predictions across the to down
the Hamilton Ticats in the Grey Cup classic, any-
; thing would be normal for the Winnipeg Manitoba,.
settlement.
This was by far the greatest see -saw gridiron.
• display we have witnessed. Head coach for the East-
ern entry, Jim Trimble for is it Tremble); was so
fi certain that his club was going to win that he al-
most had us believing it. In fact, the way he passed
along his information about his new methods in
football madness, it sounded as though all Hamilton
had to do was trot out on the field, go through 60
minutes of motions and then cart the Grey Cup back
•to the east. And why shouldn't the Ti -eat boss feel
that way? His club was a 7-5 favorite. They were
I supposed to have the best gro'1nd attack, in the
.'-' country. Winnipeg's quarter in the person of' 23 -year-
old Jilt. Van Pelt, wasn't supposed to be able to carry
classy quarter Bernie Faloney's shoes in this one.
With all this pouring through the minds of thousands
of Canadians, Winnipeg's rookie coach, Bud Grant,
.must have wondered at times what his boys were
7"doin ' in the cup final.
To us at least, the Winnipeg victory was some-
thing that Hollywood script writers sit hours trying
to dream up. This was no pipe draanl. Hamilton met
a. truly fired -up football team in this one. Down 14-0
at one time, the Bombers proved what determination,
cockiness or whatever you want to call it, can do.
The cup scene last year in the east could have been
misleading to the year
this year, The Bombers
weren't quite as healthy then as they were last
Saturday. It simply meant the difference between
winning and losing in our books.
To top it off, we were thrilled at the way
Canadian rookie Norm Rauhaus turned out to be the
hero of heroes. The 6' 1", 185 -pound 22 -year-old Win-
nipeg native, who joined the Bombers in '56, turned
in a phenomenal display on the Bomber defence. It
was the kind that all coaches dream about but rarely
see from local talent. Rauhaus intercepted a late last -
quarter pass to stop Hamilton's offensive swing cold.
Earlier in the game, the Canadian star blocked a
punt by Cam Fraser and followed it into the end
zone for a Winnipeg touchdown. He was so happy
at the -thought of his exploits that he hardly touched
ground all the way back to the bench.
If Mel Allen, the famed New York Yankees
baseball announcer, thought he had several occa-
sions in which' to use 'his favorite saying in the
World Series against Milwaukee, brother, he would
have worn it out in this three-hour show. "How about
thaw'.
THEY PROVED THEY BELONG

in Vancouver, three champions were introduced to
Canadian fans through the Canadian Schenley

Who said. Exeter Mohawks and

. mediate "B" hockey league?
At the moment Mitchell Red
Devils, a surprisingly strong
entry in the five team loop, is
holding down first place fine the
standings with three wins and a
tie. The Red Devils have pump-
ed 31 goals past rival 'netminders
land have been scored upon .only
15 times in four games.
Last Tuesday night in Lucan.
the Mitchell club skated to an
impressive 10.1 decision over the
Ilderton Wildcats in a prep for
this Friday night's battle with
the Exeter Mohawks in Exeter.
If the Mitchell club can win this
one, they'll add to their first
place supremacy whereas if the
Mohawks pull it out of the fire,
they'll move into a two-way tie
for first with the Mitchell six.
Mitchell Wins Two
After dropping their league
opener to Clinton by a 7-4 score,
Mitchell has bounced back with
three consecutive victories. Two
victories over Ilderton and a 6-2
decision over Lucan, this week
have given them the top rung.
Exeter Mohawks chalked up
their second win of the year last
Friday night before home town
fans when they pounded out a
10-3 decision over Ilderton. The
tribe turned in one of their best
displays of the season after the
first period to outscore the Wild-

Ilderton Six
After a shabby first period,
Exeter Mohawks . unleashed a
savage scoring attack to route
the Ilderton Wildcats 10-3 on a
stormy I''riday night in Exeter
before some 340 fans.
Mohawks, who couldn't llntrack
themselves in the first 20 mill••
utes of play, finally broke free
in the second period with four
big goals and then fired six more
insurance markers in the third.
If it hadn't been for the spec-
tacular netminding chore turned
in by Ilderton's Keith Scarbor-
ough, the tribe would easily have
added five or six to the total.
Scarborough kept tile Ilderton
club right in the game until
mid -way through the second per-
iod when the Mohawk pressure
,though he didn't have as much
' work to do as Scarborough.
came up with some superlative
Saves,

Six Mohawk marksmen looked
after the 'tribe's 10 -goal output
as four players pumped home
two goals apiece.
The trio .line "Red" Loader,
Bill Oherle and "Boom" Gravett
hit the target six times ('two
goals each) while centre Larry
Heideman drilled home markers
in•each of the second and third

'Jim MacDonald netted the hal-

the blueline and up front for the

Game Opens Up
After a tenacious checking,dis-
play in the opening period by
both clubs, the game opened up
considerably in the second and
third frames.

hawks in front,
The Wildcats struck back at
3:00 when Allison beat Dietrich

and Charlton drew assists on the
play.
Larry Heideman .came up with
a beautiful solo effort at 14:16
to shoot the locals in front again
and then a pair of fast ones two
minutes apart by "Boom" put
the Mohawks into a 4.1 second
period lead.
Fast Scoring In Third
Three quickies by lie tribe at
the start of the third period
actually put the game on ice.
It all started with a faceoff in
the Ilderton end, Bill Cherie,
who picked up six points on the
night's play, got the draw back
to Heideman on the point who
made no mistake with a sizzling
slanshot at 4:45,
Nine seconds later Oherle fin-
ished off a three-way passing
play with "Red" Loader and
Gravett and then at 5:15 Loader
himself ' beat Scarborough with
Oberle and "Boom" assisting.
Jim MacDonald . streamed in
all alone on the Wildcat ' net:

short side at 11:32 for, the tribe's
ninth goal of the game after
combining with defenceman Jean
Bourque on a rink length play.

Indian Club
An Indian pee wee team from
Sour • Springs, near Brantford,
will battle Lucan Leprechauns
on Friday, Dec. 12, in a return
match of the game ,,which pro•
duCed one of the most exciting
contests of the Young Canada
Tournament at Goderich earlier
this year.
Harold Ribson, Lucan arena.
manager, says the contest is a
"natural" because of the thrills
which the two teams produced in
the tournament. Lucan edged
the Indian team 5.3 and went on
to win the "D" championship.
Nine penalties were called
throughout the contest. Mitchell
was nicked for five, all minors,
while Lucan had four men sit
out two minutes apiece,
