PS Teachers Defend
New Reading Modes
Junior grade teachers at Ex
ter Public School defended an
explained modern teaching m
1hods in reading Co parents We
nesclay evening last week at th
monthly .Horne and School Asso-
ciation meeting.
Mrs. R. D. Jermyn, vice prin-
cleat, who led the group, said,
"I believe children are reading
better and with more under-
standing than ever before." Edu-
cators since the late 18th cen-
tury have bee.n lamenting teach-
ing systems. Too much of the
criticism of late is given with-
out proof."
"Specialists in education have
spent years trying to discover
new metheds," she said. "Should
we as teachers not try to take
advantage of their work?" •
"Our method is not essentially
a new method nor essentially a
sight method but a combination
ofthe best features of,, sound and
sight. It is actually for about
six weeks that children depend
on sight in early reading study,"
She added that at the end of
the first year of reading, in
grade one, children have a work-
ing vocabulary of 500 to 700
words.
Mrs. Lorne Xleinstiver ex-
plained the preparakion given
kindergarten children. She said
that the pace was necessarily
slow and showed the care with
which each phase is approached.
Of grade one work, Mts. Jer-
myn said that after the first
six weeks of pictures, children
begin to work with the .words
and sounds, alone and in phrases,
which prepare them to read in
the grades to come.
Mrs. Ron • Heinrich showed
how the use of rhyme and single
and combined sounds led grade
two pupils to find new words for
themselves.
On the grade three level, Mrs.
Donald Mousseau stated that
the purpose was to give the
child helpful tools in sight and
sound to assist him in finding
his way to reading success. She
showed how each method had
its advantage where different.
words were concerned.
All teachers stressed the im-
portarice of a child to read with
meaning and understanding at
his own level. Each accompanied
her talk with visual examples
of study methods.
A. B. Idle, principal, who in-
troduced the evening's topic,
said at the conclusion that be -
;cause of physical or mental han-
dicaps it is not possible to send
forth every pupil equipped with
grade Sight reading skills. "I
have a constant hope that the
nine will come when special
remedial classes will be pos-
sible, for those pupils who reach
the grade eight level in years
without having reached the
grade eight reading level."
e -I During the business portion
d of the lieeting, Mrs. Gerald God-
e- bolt, Home and School Associa-
d- tion president, read one of 25
e letters from members of the
school safety patrol, expressing
thanks for a recent trip to view
the festival building at Strat-
ford, •
Mrs. Godbolt thanked mem-
bers of the association for their
help with the annual kindergar-
ten tea held Friday, November
7.
The parent -attendance award
went to Mrs. Treibner's class.
Miss Betty Goudie sang two se-
lections for the group while re-
freshments were being ptepared.
Mr. Sheldon Wein thanked the
speaker.
