PROVINCIAL PENITENTIARY.
The Annual meellog of the inspectors of
the Penitentiary has been recently held; at
K-ngetoe, and we are happy to ay that the
transactions of the year have hoes highly
eaii•lactorv. The discipline of the prison
has been well maiotaioed, with much lesti
punishmeot than in previous year.. Only
.it instances of corporeal punishment oc-
curred during the year, and the lighteren-
ishmente will be 2.5 per mit ler than those
of 1849 -which were one-third under the
io6:coons of 1848. The convicts have en-
joyed uoueually good health during the
year, and have generally rooked the trades
introduced Into .,the establishment with
singular readiness.
Extensive building operations hays Wes

spacious and substantial atone build's', for
Dining -hall, Chapels, School -room, Kitch-

sad a large quantity of stone, iron asd.wood
work:prepared to complete the edifice. la
addrtion to this heavy undertaking, a dry -
kiln fir timber has bene pot up in the meet
double manner, and at great expense. A
e pecioua Iron Foundry bas also` been
erected during the year; it is built of stone,
1n the beat stylet and is complete te every
respect.
Notwithstanding these costly operations,
and several heavy extra and unforseen
charges -among which steeds £300 for e
Fire -engine aid hose -pion -we ars happy
to say that the reduced eatesates of the
year will be more than sufficient to cover
every item of expenditure, and leave the
Institution free kern debt on the 21d De-
cember. The pi -....t In,peeter.lof the Peet-
a.tiary came into office about let January,
1119; and the charge os the public chest
for ma'staioing the lestitotioo during the
tb• four years preceding their admistetre-
tion was as follows: -
1445 £I5,156 4 6
- 1846 16,076 10 9

1848 17,01! 1 8
Amount of dela on 31e Des

The cool of maintaisinf the Institution
was therefore £16,475 2 6 per annum ea
an ge of the four rears.
In the nest year of the present manage -
meet, the cost to the piddle of matetatntog
the prison was reduced £6,6116 18 10. The
estimates were for £11,1118 11 7 for the
year, - and the 'tenet , , was
£10,590 3 7. For the year jest closed,
the estimates were for £7,515 5 4, and the
