Encouragement of a full-scale election and sponsorshipof a community -wide "get out the 'vote" campaign, were among topics discussed by liensail Chamber of Commerce at its, meeting in the Legion Hall on Wednesday, Oct. 2. President Charles riford urged. chamber members to ensure con- tests for all posts in the coming municipal election, and outlined! organization of a telephone "blitz" of the village to get rate- payers to the polls. The Chamber of Commerce, he said, should encourage eitizensi Ito stand for "office in order , to • allow electors to exercise 'their franchise. lie asked members. ) to approach people they con- sidered would be good candidates' and urge them to allow their Dames to he nominated. He announced that a 'commit- tee would be organized 'to direct the telephone campaign with the objective of contacting :every eligible voter to ask him or her to east a ballot'. Even though the village has had an excellent vot- ing record in the past, every effort., should be made to better it. lie said. President riford also outlined a new comniunity labor bank proposal which he felt could make a substantial contribution to the village's progress. The project, lie explained, would be to secure pledges from community residents as to the number of hours of voluDtarY labor they would , be willing to contribute „during the year. Pass hooks indicating this pledge would be issued and,at each project, the volunteer's _contribution would be marked as a "credit" against his pledge "debit." Persons who contributed the most hours would' receive prizes. Mr. Fiford felt one of the major Projects which would benefit from this scheme would be the!, development of `the community centre grounds. General clean- ups, installation of tennis ,tourts, and other recreational facilities: would aid in developing The centre which, lie suggested. would help in the attraction of • new industry in the village.
