A man who spent :five years
in the underground fighting dic-
tatorship says Canadians don't
appreciate the freedom they en-
; joy. .
Rev. Bren de Vries, rector of
T r i v i t t Memorial Anglican
Church, told Exeter Kinsmen
1 Thursday night that Canada is
one of the few real democratic
countries left ill the world. Most
# of us take it for granted," he
I said.
!A native of the Haig, Rev. de
Vries joined the underground in
1940 when the Gelman army in-
waded the Netherlands and he
directed underground newspa-
per operations in several cities
until 1945. -
Elis decision to join the under-
ground was made when he saw
a neighbor's young son being
beaten and kicked by police
when he tried to get a. kiss from
his Jewish father who was being
taken away to prison camp.
The minister described many
of the atrocities committed by,
the occupation forces during the
war and the risks taken by the
l
underground in attempting to un-
dermine the German rule.
