income increased $132 million
over the first four months of
J957, also population increased
by almost half a million.
Ordinarily any of the features
mentioned would have been ac-
companied by some increase in
the consumption, of butter. Since
the increase has not been forth-
coming, maybe it's time the but-
ter industry shook off the com-
placent attitude and really start•
ed to sell butter.
For some strange reason
people first think of economizing
nn food. Housewives have de -
mended more expensive packag-
ing and partially or wholly pre-
pared food yet, in spite of this
added cost, are spending the
same percentage of their income
at the grocery store. This can
only mean that a smaller and
smaller percentage goes for the
food contained in the package.
Butter, for example, is an ex-
cellent food but margarine does
cost less per pound, so the cus-
tomer buys margarine to save
the pennies.
I wonder where the pennies
go? Largely for things much less
valuable than good food. If mi-
lady wants a new hat or a hair-
do she all too often saves up
by putting away the difference
between the price of butter and
margarine, .
This is a point that salesmen
Of farm products need to realize.
The housewife does prefer but-
ter and doesn't object to a fair
price. However, when "hubby"
wants some new golf clubs or
fishing tackle the money •is, too
often, gained by using margarine
instead of butter; a soup bone
instead of steak.
Later comes the mac! swallow-
ing of vitamin pills that might
have been had in a proper diet.
Some „ years ago my doctor com-
pared butter quite favorably
with cod liver oil as a source of
vitamins,
Let us not be penny-wise and
pound-foolish when supplying our
families with food.
"Did you ever hear anything
so beautiful!" exclaimed th.c
daughter of the house, as, she
turned a new rock and roll re-
cord on the gramophone.
"No," replied her father. "The
nearest thing I ever heard to it
was when the truck loaded with
empty milk cans had a collision
with another truck that was
loaded with hop."
