We'll probably get shot for making this our .feature story :0 the week but to our way of thinking Harry has :credit coming to him for his remarkable performance :down St. Thomas way, We say remarkable because this annual in- vitation isn't just another shoot. It attracts the best Shooters from all over Ontario. In fact, there were even two marksmen from Niagara Falls, New York. In the biggest tGurney of the area held each year, Harry scared 49 out of 50 hits in the 16 -yard event, In the handicap group, which is a little on the tougher side, particu- larly on Victoria Day be- cause- of high winds, Harry chalked up a total of 93 targets in 100 tries. In the final round, the a- active Exeter Gun Club If* • winner was e pitted a?'ainst well-known James TR° mp- Harry Mothers son Jr., of London, in a 25 target playoff. Looking for a perfect score to wrap up the tourney. Harry missed on his third shot and admitted to this corner that he thought he had lost all chances of winning. However. the Exeter marksman had a keen eye the rest of the way and the third shot was the only one he goofed. Harry was presented with the Carling Trophy on which. his name will be engraved along with eight previous winners. John Anderson and Tom Sherritt of Hensall also attended the outing and although they didn't pin down any of the prizes, they watched with pleasure Harry Mathers' first-class performance. For this fine showing, Harry, we offer heartiest con- gratulations! * * * * * * . Clay target shooting was quite a popular sport at one time in this district as several district dwellers had their own private shooting galleries. One of the old trap shooting grounds was up behind. Bert Rivers' gas station on Highway 4 towards 'Alen. Alvin Essery used to run that one while another was built on Doug Triebner's property on Huron St. West, The first actual Exeter Gun Club was formed around 1942 by a group of local men, Included in this group were Frank and George Hicks, Alvin Essery and his son, Bill, of Centralia; the late Perce Passmore, who had a trap in his own yard; and Lorne and Elmore Passmore of Thames Road. Some of the mare consistent shooters from town included "Hank" Green, Russ Brintnell, Doug Triebner, Bill Chambers and "Bunny" Ford. Another of the more Ardent supporters of the gun club was the late Fred Kerr from Crediton. If eyer there was a "crack" shot, he certainly \vv. one! Participating in the sport at 70 years of age, the late Mr. Kerr was one of the best shooters in the club. We've been told that Stewart and Jerry Law- son were just a couple of kids hanging around the shooting events and were asked to fill in a team when some of the regular members couldn't make It.. We might add that they were very good for their age as they'd nail anywhere from 16 to 19 birds when given the chance, Getting back to present day activities, the Exeter Gun Club is made up of only a handful of men but steps have been taken to increase the membership from 35 to 40. With Harry Mathers win- ning the St. Thomas shoot, it should certainly help to bring more members to the club. The small working committee is trying in every possible way to build up the local club arid one of the means is by having a shoot on the Fink farm on June 28 with clubs from Goderich, Clinton and Kippen. The affair should be quite a battle of marksmanship. The four clubs plan to wrap up their summer activities with a banquet in the fall. HURON -PERTH LEAGUE BACK IN ACTION Things got rolling in the Huron -Perth Inter- mediate Baseball League this past week with a pair of Victoria Day ball games taking place in Mitchell and Dad:mood, Although the young fry Mohawks took it on the chin to the tune of 12-5, they'd like the Dashwood executive to know that it wasn't the first 11 runs that hurt, it was the twelfth! Seriously though, Dashwood proved to be a little too strong for the tribe in the opener but as the season wears along, the Mohawk aggregation in4" be pulling a few surprises. Exeter's first home stand will take place this Friday night with the powerful Zurich Lumber Kings providing the opposition. Dashwood will move into Zurich on the 28th an this month for the Lumber Kings' home opener.' * * * * * * CUFF CLEANERS — Things are shaping up well for the first horse, races at the Exeter fair grounds on June 5.
