It was good to see the local Mohawk aggregation back On the diamond. dust for -their first workout Tuesday flight. The tribe is -starting off the season on the Strength -of -Exeter Recreational Council's financial generosity but how long they can keep going is an- other thing. In -order to- -operate the entire season the team, which is under Jo e Wooden this year, will need a lit- tle support at, the gate. One of the team's biggest stumbling blocks is the paying of the umpire. The- rrien in blue must be paid $14 every time they go to work. The plate umpire collects eight of the 14 with. the rest going to the ruler of the bases. The Mohawk situation could be a good one as far as the team is concerned. We don't mean they'll run. away backwards with a championship or anything like that, but with the -nucleus of last year's midget team whichcopped the OBA title two years ago and a few of the better players still kicking around from last years intermediate squad, should enable them to nail their share of victories. The Huron -Perth League executive is stili on the lookout for entries. At the first meeting held in Zur- ich two weeks ago, only three clubs — Zurich, Mitch- ell and Dashwood — signified their intentions to play. Now that the tribe is in, it's a four -team league. Don't forget the league meeting this Friday night in Zurich, which will be conducted by Leroy O'Brien, league president. Possibility of forming an inter -lock- ing schedule with some • northern teams will be dis- cussed. All clubs interested in playing intermediate ball this summer should have someone in authority present, EXETER TO -HAVE SOFTBALL CLUB We were informed by Blake Gifford on Tuesday night that Exeter will definitely be represented in the WOAA softball grouping this year. Blake also notified us that all the Exeter home games will be played in Hensall under the lights due to the lack of Thomas Edison's power on the local diamond. Getting a grouping that would be local enough is the chief problem that stands in front of "Gif" who is at the moment acting as team manager, However, teams from Ailsa Craig. Centralia, Moncton and Se- bringville have indicated they may compete. If any- one is interested in entering a club, contact Gifford at 67-J Exeter. It is hoped that a practise will be held at the beginning ef next week. * * * * * * STILL ON BASEBALL A group of interested sportsmen have -their mind On. forming a pee wee baseball league which runs along the line of the United States Little League play. John McCarron says. Centralia is definitely interested and so is Lucan. Hensall has a man who, from all reports, is very interested. If a team could be formed there and may- be one or two froth Exeter, Grand Bend and Mitchell, the little gaffers would be playing just like their big league idols. Setting up a league such as this is quite a chore but if it's done, it would be a great thing for the kids. * * * • * BROOMBALL CHAMPIONS We'd like to send out our belated congratulations to the Dashwood Broomball Club on winning the Lake Huron Zone Recreation Council broomball champion- ship several weeks ago. The Dashwood team downed Exeter Mohawks, who incidentally won the works far the past three years, and then ousted a strong RCAF Centralia club to gain the right to represent this sec- tion in the zone playoffs.' Players on the championship club include Bill Becker, Jim Hayter, Bob Hayter, Russ Hoperoft, Hu- bert Miner, Dick Regier, Charlie Tiernan, Mervin. Webb, Ted Webb, George Tiernan, Gerald Martene and Roy Webb. ,The Lake Huron Zone Recreational Council hold the broombell tourney in a different municipality each year and it's under the able direction of Bob Secord. Incidentally, the Dashwood club carted home the Carling Trophy which was donated to Bob Secord by our good friend "Spiky" Weiler, of Walkerton, who now covers territory for the Carling Brewing Co. Ltd. * • * CUFF CLEANERS Exeter's first golf tourney will be held May 11 at Grand Bend. The opener will be run along the lines of last year's competitions but from then on defiriite changes will be made . All players interested in minor softball and baseball should get in touch with Larry Heideman . Has anyone seen Silky Sullivan round the last turn yet? . It looks as though the New York Yankees are sitting back waiting for the World Series—they've had so many postponed games lately; Haven't had much word on those big ones that got away , C. M. "Claude" Farrow was hotter than a firecracker last weekend with his putter. in eighteen boles he one -putted 13 greens, How's that for really Stan Leonard continues to hold his owe on the pro circuit; picked up another $050 in this last outing.
