HOCKEY STILL iN LIMELIGHT
n
1J,
i.
Although most .district teams have hung i.
e itt ,
their gear for the, season, hockey continues to be a
• ,>ianajor topic on the local front. Late last December
• we mentioned in one of our columns the success
that some of the recent Exeter Mohawks players
were having in the Senior- "B" grouping with Wood -
Stock Athletics. At that time they were perched in
fiat place, three points up on the Wallaceburg
gee Hornets. As the months have
been torn off the calendar,
the A's have advanced along
the line and now find them-
selves in the Ontario finals
against the Meaford Knights.
Bill Woodward, who took
over the Mohawks glues -way
through the '56-'57 season,
is at the Woodstock helm
and win or lose in this final,
he should be given a lot of
credit for the success he's
bad with his chub.
Woody has gone along
with young Ron Salter as his
regular netminder. In his
first year of Senior "B" ex-
ploration, Salter turned out
to be the league's top net-
minder. No doubt the classy
goalkeeper was worthy of his honor but we'll bet he
got a lot of help from a pair of defence stalwarts
who once played with the local Moh.:wks in the per -
eons of Jack Dwyer and Doug Thiel, who is the
club's captain.
"A's" REAL CHAMPIONS OF GROUP
The Athletics Won their group honours the
hard way by corning from behind • in a best -of -seven
series with the powerful \Vallaceburg Hornets to win
three straight games and take the title. Not only did
they jump back from being down 3-1 in the series
but Woodward's crew blasted home four goals in the
last five minutes of the last game right in Wallace-
burg to pull the game out of the fire. The defence
duo of Thiel and Dwyer had much to do with the
big victory as they did when the club bounced
Niagara Falls Motorville Rockets out of the Ontario
semi-finals in four straight games. Dwyer, who is
turning in one of his best seasons for Woodstock
fans, picked up a goal and seven assists in this
short four -game series.
• The real test facing Woodward's club is the
next series against the powerful Meaford • Knights.
We say powerful because all you have to do is glance
over their lineup to see what they have., We see the
navies of Bill McComb, Vern Gardiner, have.,
Kezar
tan, Art Hayward, Eddie Loutit, Totn Jamieson and
goalie Red Henry, which speak for themselves. The
Meaford six have a bagful of players boasting Senior
"A" and professional experience. This Henry chappie'
is the one who had a short stint with the Boston
Bruins of the National Hockey League.
HIGH ON WOODSST')CK CLUB
As many of the tribe fans are following the
Woodstock march, the following comments on the
Woodstock club from Doug Austin of the Niagara
Palls Review should prove interesting.
"The visitors were well -coached and had their
strength well divided. The Athletics possess speed
and hustle. They seem to have patterned their de-
fensive style after 1 -lap Day's system with the Maple
Leafs of holding, clutching and hooking at every
opportunity in such a manner that the referees fail
to see it as an infraction of the rules. In their own
end of the rink, the Athletics have been well drilled
in the style featured by many pro clubs. In essence,
their format is to have the two wings camped. just
inside the blueline near the boards. The centre and
two defencenien then try to bleak up the opposition
'play and pass up to one of the waiting Hankers. Not
only does this system make for a fast break but it
also leaves most of your opponents' strength caught
up the ice and makes for unmolested goal -getting
rebounds."
All of this in our estimation is due to 'the
fine work of Bill Woodward and his professional
experience. As to who will win the series your guess
is as good as mine. Anyone who wants a chance to
see the two finalists in action should drop over to
Woodstock this Friday night.
