The -concluding study on Japan
was discussed by Mrs, Lloyd
Taylor at the March meeting of
the W.M.S. Afternoon Auxiliary
of dames Street United church
on Thursday afternoon.
lo the subject "Japan Past,
Present and Future" Mrs. Tay-
lor said "Long before Christo-
pher Columbus discovered Am-
erica Roman Catholic mission-
aries under Francis Xavier were
at work in Japan :with consider-
able success. The persecution
wiped out the Roman Catholics
and closed Japan's doors to
Western religion, commerce
trade and civilization."
"In 1853 Perry sailed into
Japan and was accepted, The
Japanese quickly absorbed, West-
ern culture and .metheds. As
Western counties did, so Japan
annexed more territory: For-
mosa, Malaya Peninaulai• parts
of China and Manchuria. Dur-
ing wars Japan lost them -again.
In 1859 first christian mission-
aries went to Japan and in the
first 13 years there were only
10 converts. Most missionaries
bad to leave during the war
and were not accepted again

THIS
'N THAT
By MRS.
Two or three weeks ago in this
column we advocated eating a
good breakfast to start the day
off right.
In a recent issue of The Ottawa
Evening Journal, a man who has
taken interest in his food for
several decades and who has ex-
perimented systematically and
logically still believes that the
deterioration of the social order
began when folks stopped eating
pie for breakfast.
He says a return to the custom
of pie to conclude breakfast
would work incalcuable benefit
to the country. It all citizens
woul set alarm clocks half an
hour earlier, dress without hurry.
ing and eat a substantial first
meal of the day, tensions, frus-
trations and irritations would dis-
appear.
Naturally, there is opportunity
for disagreemeet as to the best
pie for the first meal. Possibly
mince is a trifle heavy, but apple,
cherry, pumpkin, prune or apri-
cot pie is a fitting ending to the
meal.
What do our readers think of
this advice — pie for breakfast?
We invite your comments.
We were very pleased to re-
ceive a cheery note .from Mrs,
Gordon Harding, of Gardena,
California, enclosing a recipe for
a salad which she says is appro-
priate for the month of March,
but she writes "I love it any
.month. 1 hope your readers try
it.'
