Exeter. Mohawks, in their bid
to represent Western Ontario in
et,
playdowns, have taken a coin -
Mending lead in their best -of -
seven playoff series with Philips-
burg Chevs as a result, of three
victories last week.
After playing to a 4.4 tie in
their first game, Ai01141V1iS have
bounced right back for a 5-3 vic-
tory on foreign and home ice
plus an extra 5-2 deeision before
500 fans last Saturday night in
Exeter.
Because ONTARIO MINOR HOCKEY AS-
OCIATION and ONTARIO HOCKEY ASSOCIATION
rtilea differ 111. their age groupclassifications, HEN-
SALL BANTAMS have moved right back into conten-
tion or another crack at copping the WESTERN
ONTARIO BANTAM "D" title and possibly an ALL -
ONTARIO 0.M.H.A. crown.
The best -of -three series, Ivhieh MILDMAY
BANTAMS won 2,0, has been completely washed out
thanks to the alert men behind the scenes of the
1-lensall Kinsmen hockey executive and the prompt
attention given to the matter by JACK OAKS, prem.
dent of the 0,M.H.A, now living in STRATHROY.
The beef came when MILDMAY BANTAMS
picked up PAUL AMACHER of ZURICH to fill the
• nets for them while their goaltender was supposedly
recovering from a leg injury. (We say supposedly
because one of their players couldn't tell us what
exactly was wrong with him,) The use of Amacher,
who beyond a doubt is the best net custodian around
these parts In his ago bracket, caused coaches B013
REABURN, HAROLD KNIGHT, FRANK ELLWOOD
and BILL MICKLE to check into his eligibilty. The
.: foursome tried the WOAA on their protest but it
: didn't stand up so they moved on farther into
0.M.H.A. officiaLs where they got immediate action.
We &mit care much to sit and listen to pro.
tests but in this case we feel if the proper ruling
had been given in the first place, the whole incident
wouldn't have taken place.
Who is actually to blame? JIM KUNKEL, coach
• of the MILDMAY club? PAUL AMACI-IER, who plays
.• because he loves the game, or BARRY ABBS' mother,
of EBENEZELI, who wouldn't let her son play goal
* for MILDMAYThecause the rivalry is so great between
the two centres?
Personally, we feel that the WOAA, who
drummed up the incorrect ruling on AMACHER, did
the injustice! ALF LOCKRIDGE quoted a ruling from
the 0.11.A. rule book to KUNKEL of Mildmaystating
that he could use any goaltender he wanted. Right
away he thought of Amacher, because Paul used to
be a resident of that town. With what he thought
was the official O.K. to use him, he did, in a way
you can't blame KUNKEL for doing this. Amacher
wasn't at fault as he only did what any other kid
' would do if asked to play goal for a club, especially
if it was a winning one,
Despite all these proceedings, the HENSALL
executive went one jump farther in approaching the
0.M.H.A. The 0.111.H.A. wouldn't allow MILDMAY to
proceed into their playdowns, so a new series has
been set up between HENSALL and MMDMAY.
•: Incidentally, a couple of the man rules that
Hensell based their protest on were: (1) Classifiea.
tion—A player can't live outside a seven mile limit;
(2) No player will be permitted to sign in more.than
one centre in the same season; (3) An 0.M.H.A.
player Must be a resident of the centre in which he
rlays at least one year prior to NOVEMBER 1 of
that season.
Without Amacher between the pipes, we feel
confident that HENSALL will give MILDMAY all the
competition they want despite the fact that Mildmay
:. has a real standout in the person of DAVID MORLEY,
their captain. REABURN'S two lines of BILL SHAD -
DICK - BRYAN BONTHRON - HAROLD JAQUES and
STEVE KYLE - ROSS McBEATH - JERRY CHAPMAN
will do more than hold their own in this second
series. Any fans who have a night free when the new
series gets going will do well to take in the games
. as the boys play good hockey.
HOLD THEM TIGERS! Detroit Tigers of the
• American Baseball League really have a pair of
ardent backers in town. The two hold the names of
monsieurs HAROLD WOLFE and HARRY HOLTZ-
.-- MAN. The pair submitted to this corner the TIGERS'
starting lineup for the 1958 season. Well, here it is:
1st base, RAY OONE; 2nd. PRANK BOLLING: 3rd,
RENO BERTORIA; short, BILLY MARTIN; left field,
CHARLIE MAXWELL; right, AL KALINE; centre,
HARVEY KUENN, and catcher, JIM HEGAN. Start-
ing pitcher is none other than JIM BUNNING. No
: comment on who was going to pitch the second in-
: fling after Bunning was sent to the showers.
Oops, we almost forgot to add who was going
• to operate the club. They named the coach as GERRY
SMITH, trainer, BILL MUSSER, and first base coach
:• yours truly! rwouId, be a sad, sad day for the
YANKEES if we three stooped to root for the claw-
ing Tigers.
BERT HORTON of HENSALL should get quite
a kick out of this lineup and its personnel as he has
about as mud- lova for the YANKS as the TOWN
OF HENSALL has 'tor the WOAA. Although the NEW
YORKERS haven't wen a game in the Grapefruit
League to date, never fear, The TIGERS didn't win
one all winter!

isn't as rosy as the lash bowed
out of a best -of -seven series with
Palmerston Tigers 4-0.
The final game of this series
was won in Palmerston by a 7-5
score. Officials handed out 27
penalties in the contest in which
eight majors were included.
Forest Lakesides, who. have

Exeter Mohawks took a COM
manding lead in their best -o
seven series with the Philiftsbur
Chars on Saturday night befor
500 home town fans, when the,
chalked up their third straigh
victory of the series with on
game tied.
The Tribe, after yielding -open
tug period goals in each of the
first and second periods to the
Chevs, bounced right hack for
an impressive 5.2 decision,
Mohawks were paced by
centre Larry Heideman and Don
Gravett who each fired two
goals in the contest and the
aggressive offensive chore
turned in by work -horse Bill Pin-
combe. Spectacular goaltending
on the part of Exeters' Gar
Baker was also a major factor
in the triumph as the agile net -
minder thwarted numerous
threats by the Chet's.
Wilfred Arnold brought groans
from the Exeter fans at 14.12 of
the first period with the first
goal of the game, when he beat
Baker with a low shot into the
lefthand corner of the net. The
goal was a honey by the Philips-
burg alternate captain as he
bulled his way down the right
boards to set, up his scoring play.
At 18.44 the Tribe got hack on
even terms when Heideman sank
his first goal with a low back-
hander, Billy Fincombe picked
up the first of three assists in
the game on this play as he dug
the puck out of the corner for
his lanky centreman
Jerry McMillan and Arnold
teamed up for the second, Phil-
ipsburg goal at 1:10 of the sec-
ond period with McMillan doing
the honours to give the visitors
the lead for the second time in
the game.
Philipsburg managed to hold
onto the edge until 13:19 when
Bill Oberle fired his fifth goal
of the series past Fred Currah
in the Chev's net. Playing coach
"lied" Loader assisted on the
scoring play.
The Mohawks came back
strong in the third period when
they slammed home three Un-
answered goals to wrap up the
game.
Heideman and Pincombe Learn-
ed up once again at 7:10 for the
first tribe counter and then
"Boom" sank his first of two
on a backhand front a scramble
in front of the net.
Coach Walter "Punch" Scher-
er of the Philipsburg club pulled
goaltender Fred Currah in favor
of an extra forward at the 18:15
mark when a .feeeoff occured
in the Exeter end of the rink.
However, his strategy backfired
just 15 seconds later when •
"Boom" lifted a high shot from
centre ice into the unguarded
Philipsburg net.
