It was :our privilege to attend the SBCOND

the eity of London, .Several star athletes, who put
Many miles on U,S. and Canadian highways end
'through -the -air to make their .appearance, attended
on 'behalf of the crippled. :kiddies and the new =die,
al centre planned for them which will be .constructed
in the very 11041' future,
- The ,event„ which raised something like '$7,000
towards the centre, attracted Athletes from _every
phase of the sports world to greet the public. We'd
like to relay to you a feW o thc highlights from
SOMe. of the celebrities,
JOHN ``j.00KO" CONLIN, a fight'n little Irish -
mart who is one of the' men in blue in the NATIONAL
BASEBALL LEAGUE when he's working, headed the
list as head table guests W110 passed on speeches to
the 300 who paid *25 per plate for admission.
"Jock0, 'who just returned from the OM Country
where he conducted umpire schools, stood before the
audience carrying a. big grin. The grin was for the
audience because, he related, umpires :weren't used
to getting applanse. The only thing he bears or sees
in BROOKLYN is bottles coming hs way and loud
boos! But he still loves the fans in Bum Town.
"Anything can happen. in BROOKLYN!"„ said
jocko, "In one game I had a real battle on my bands
to get the scorekeeper to take a Brooklyn run down
off the .scoreboard and finally when he did get it
down, the fans almost buried me alive! They waited
for me after the game to come out of the stadium
but when I did no one 'recognized me. I was wearing
a light grey suit with a matchin,,ct fedora and they
were still looking for a man in a blue suit!" -.CONLON
Also calls LEO DUROCHER "a man of a few thousand
words." 1 guess he should know because he's had
enough rhubarbs with him on the baseball fields.
•.Some of our readers might wonder how in
the world two people like "ROCKY" MARCIANO and
JERSEY JOE WALCOTT ever got into the same
building without the. place being torn apart after all
the' big time fights they've been through. There's a
very interesting sidelight on the men from the
boxing world.
• MARCIANO says that boxing today is big
• business. it has been for him as he now owns suc.
cess, security and happiness. No athlete could ask
for more. To JERSEY JOE, he paid sincere tribute.
'Walcott gave me the fight of my life," said the
Rock. •
MARCIANO, who was heavyweight champ
from '52 until. he retired in '56, said he was hurt
manytimes in the WALCOTT bout fOr the title in
'52 but something gave hint a push to come up with
R. -victory in the thirteenth round. Before the big
fight, WALCOTT visited ROCKY at his training
quarters and stated that if he had to lose, he would
be glad.to lose to a guy like him. "WALCOTT is a
real sportsman and I'll never forget his words,"
Stated MARCIANO.
By the way, JERSEY JOE was the only one
there who could really boast of a dark suntan.
Will. the DETROIT RED WINGS make the
playoffs? Well here are the opinions of GORDIE
HOWE and "RED" KELLY. Howe figures that the
Wings will need all the luck they can get to stay
in there for a playoff berth. KELLY, who really lives
up to his nickname of "RED", smilingly advised us
not to give up on the Wings. "We're still in there
pitching!" LEONARD wished all kinds of success to
big' JEAN BELIVEAU of the MONTREAL CANAD-
IENS who was also present at the dinner, That is,
he wished .him the best up until March 24. After
