Huron Safe Driving Week
To Study Cars,. Licences
A. campaign aimed at safer
cars, better driving and other
means deaths was launched Tuesdayt
when Huron Federation of Agri-
culture and its Co-operative In-
surance Association committee
agreed to sponsor Rural Safe
Driving Week,'February 24 to 28,
in the county this year.
The Huron campaign will be
conducted in co-operation with the
provincial drive by the Ontario
Federation. Climax will come at
a big rally night in Clinton on
February 24,
Farm forums will be invited I
to submit essays end resolutions
on safe driving 'and they will
compete for some of the $600 in
prizes being offered across the
province.
During the next month, some
350 Ontario farm forums will be'
asked to discuss the topic, "Are
we sacrificing safety for style
and speed in today's automobile."
Officials hope the forums' find-
ing will help to create public
demand for safety -engineered
cars.
At a meeting of Huron Federa-
tion and CIA offii~ials in Clinton
Tuesday, Ontario Federation
Heldman, .Jim Jacklin explained
that a similar campaign had been
waged two years ago, and traffic
accidents had been cut by 20
per cent. 'The special week was
not observed last year and acci-
dents rose to record levels,
The `Ontario Federation says
today'scars are not safe, after
studying Canadian and U.S: in-
vestigations into traffic accidents.
"The public has been lulled
into thinking it has a safe car
when it hasn't," Mr. Jacklin
quoted from a Federation report
"At least half the annual butch
ery on our highways could,' be
prevented by the automobile
manufacturers,"
"Today's car," be said, "is_ not
as safe as airplanes were in the
first world war."
The Federation 1's suggested
that a national annual award be
given to the manufacturer pro-
ducing the automobile with the
hest built-in safety features. The
Federation praises Ford for the
safety features it introduced in
1957. It pointed, out, however,
that many of,these features are
"extras."
Laxity in granting drivers'
licences was severely condemned
by Mr. J`acklin. He cited a case
of a man over 80 who was still
getting a Iicence indicating his
age as 71. the also recalled an
incident in Orillia where several
teenagers failed to pass drivers'
tests but went' to Beaverton
where they received licences
without any test.
He, himself, had received a
driver's license without a.test.
In his annual report to Huron
directors, Murray Maxwell,
manager of the London office of
CIA, stated that five-year claim -
free driving awards will soon be
issued to its policy holders in
an effort to recognize good
drivers.
Loss ratio for CIA across the
province was 66 per cent in 1957,
a 10 per cent reduction from the
i previous year.. Profits of the
association amounted to $100,000,
most of which was put into capi-
tal fund.
Mr. Maxwell praised Huron
County as one of the leaders in
the automobile insurance pro -
,gram. •
CIA, which • now has 62,000
policies, stands tenth among well
over 200 auto insurance com-
panies in the province,
Chairman of the meeting was
Harvey Taylor, Belgrave, County
Heldman Cart Hemingway was
appointed publicity director,
