CURLING has hit Exeter tike a gold rush 'beet
hi the days of the ',Were. The steady stream of traf-
fic that trails up to the Exeter arena from Tuesday
noon to midnight each week proves that another
sport has been born in this town of some 2,504 Citi-
zens, To our knowlet.ge, it's the first time in history
that Exeter has formed its own curling .club under
the name of EXETER CURLING CLUB. " Last year
the sport was more or less baptized in an experiment-
al stage, but now because of such enormous success,
it has carded right on to bigger and better things
in :its second year of operation.
Already the curling club executive has pure
chased its own stones, brooms and hacks and have
even gone so far as to have
held its first organized local
bonspiel, Teams from the
,Exeter club have ventured
out into some stiff competi-
tion for fun arc experience.
Only last Wednesday two
ladies` quartets hiked it over
to Seaforth where they ran
up against .first-class, corn -
petition from KITCHENER,
LONDON and: STRATFORD.
MARY BIGGART skipped a
rink with MARJ POLLEN,
MARG WEIN and IRENE ROSS in her foursome
and they managed to win one game in three. EILEEN
RANNIE of Hensall skipped a quartet nude up of
CATHERINE SOUTHCOTT, LOIS LEARN and HELEN
SANDERS and although they didn't win a thing, they
wouldn't have missed it for the world.
Another important step being taken by the
Exeter club is the holding of their first INVITATION
BONSPIEL on February 12. Rinks from CLINTON,
LISTOWEL, THEDFORD, ST. MARYS, SEAFORTH,
HENSALL, MITCHELL, STRATFORD, LONDON, ST,
THOMAS and CENTRALIA are all expected to be
here for the day to compete for $150 in prizes. The
first prize consists of a beautiful table lighter in-
scribed by the Exeter, Curling Club for each team
member while the team finishing second will be pre-
sented with ,ash trays on which an engraved gold
curling rock rests. Consolation winners will have a
Tight to smile because they get engraved beer mugs!
TED TAMAN, whom many Exeter residents may
recall since he. once lived here, will be back for this
tourney to skip one of the LISTOWEL rinks. The
Exeter ladies will be catering dinner and, supper to
the hungry shotmakers, so the do will really be
run off in fine fashion.
The most important step taken by the Curling
Club in its two-year operation we have left until last
to mention.. After such a spontaneous response to
the game, club members who include 40 ladies and
64 male curlers are thinking about building their
town rink. In fact, they've gone one step farther and
have organized committees to investigate the finances
needed for erecting such a building. Over in SEA-
FORTH they tell us that their rink, which has four
larges, cost them $35,000. Up in LISTOWEL, BILL
ALLISON signals that they really have a dandy! It
also has four sheets, a clubroom and is run by its
own compressor. It's safe to bet that this one rolled
around in the high $30,000 nark.
u Naturally the cost xseems terri" c, but no mat,
ter what one builds nowadays, you have to pay for
it. A curling rink such as the one in Listowel or any
rink here strictly for curling to our estimation would
be a definite asset to this town, As far as other
curling centres are concerned, Exeter would be on
the snap. We feel the place would pay for itself
easily in time if the response keeps up the way it
has been in the last two years. We'd like to see it
done!
LUCAN HAVE THEIR IRISH UP! We received
an interesting letter from our old frien - JACI(
READY the other day (of course, after Lutan downed
the Mohaleks 7.4). Jack tells us to quit crying the
blues and that we weren't short-handed the night
we were beaten 7-4. "You had six men on the ice
all the time and two referees!" charges JACK. He
also reminds us that they were short-handed, too.
They didn't have their regular stickboy on the bench!
It seems that all this came about after a write-
up appeared in the London Free Press about the
7-4 loss. Apparently it sounded to Jack that I was
making excuses for our loss because of player short-
age. Sorry to disappoint you, old boy, but GORD
BAYNHAM was the evil one on the end of the tele- '
phone who put in the writeup!

CUFF CLEANERS --BOB JOHNSTON is having
tWugh luck trying to participate in this winter sport
called hockey. Bob, son. of Mr, and Mrs. ROSS JOHN-
STON, Zurich, who plays for the midgets of that
town, suffered three cracked ribs in Clinton two
weeks ago and twllen promptly sprained his right
ankle Mn Hensall on January 29 when attending a
game . , , Injuries keep cropping up all over with
the MOI -HAWKS knee deep in them ...Almost as
bad as the .LES CANADIENS .. , Those TORONTO
MAPLEOS can't seem to win two games in a row
to natter how hard they try. Must be against their
t'eligion! , .. Sorry to cause all the confusion in
the, LADIES BOWLING LEAGUE this past week. We
thought that only one trophy prevailed for each
of the high triple, single and average awards, But
apparently they give three trophies out` in each of
their "A" and "B" groupings . P . Watch the head
pine, gals! .. Two teams will be. here from
STIIATHROY this Saturday afternoon for exhibition
gaggles against two sixsomes from Exeter,

teams stepped out into their first
round of WOAA competition for
the '58 season this week, and, of
the four games played, the locals
managed to cop three of thein.
The local midget and bantam
teams lined up against Mitchell's
best.for three games, while the
Exeter pee wee club made the
journey to Lucan to tangle with
Ilderton's top squad.
Against Ilderton, the pee wees
hung a neat 4-1 decision after Il-
derton had grabbed a 1.0 first
period lead on Bob Zfudson's
marker at 8,40.
Mike Cushman spearheaded
the. Exeter victory by putting the
teams back on even terms in the
second period with the first of
his two goals. The free -wheeling
centreman Made it 2-1 at 1.30 of
the third to put leis club in the
lead, for the first time in the
game. Stan Lesnick drew assists
on both the goals.
Bobby MacDonald blinked the
light at 8.20 with assistance from
Freddy Wells for a commanding
3-1 lead. Wells put the game on
ice at the even 10.00 minute
mark with an unassisted marker
for the 4.1 victory.
Midgets Split Two Games
Exeter Kinsmen Midgets regis-
tered a 6.3 victory over M'itchel'l
on home ice, but failed to accom-
plish a clean sweep of the best -
of -three series in 11Iitc11e11 on
Monday night when they were
stopped 3.2 by a hustling young
hockey club.
Arnold Smith pushed the series
to the limit when he scored at
17.09 of the final frame after
taking a pass from Ahrens to
Merchants
Dip Flyers
Overcoming a 2.0 deficit in the
first five minutes of play, Point
Edward Merchants rallied for six
consecutive unanswered goals to
down the visiting Zurich Flyers
6.2 Wednesday evening on home
ice.
Playing coach Don Hesse, who
scored after 45 second of play,
and team captain Doug O'Brien
who flashed the light at 5.10,
gave the Flyers what looked to
be a commanding lead at that
time,
However, before the first 20
minutes had ended, Gary Fitz-
patrick of the Merchants scored
his first of two goals to put his
club back in the game.
Pete Leaver fired a pair of Pt.
Edward goals in the second to go
with a singleton off the stick of
Hartley Vernon, to put the home -
sten in front for the first time
in the game.
Fitzpatrick's Second market in
the third with a goal from 'Toss
Free, put the issue beyond doubt
for the Merchants.

'give his team a hard-fought 3-2
decision,
Lloyd Moore fired a pair. for
Exeter but the goals were offset
by Ken Warren's two -goal spree
tin the first period. Warren was
playing in the midget game al
though he is still of bantam age
.All nine goals were scored in
the first period of the contest that
took place on Exeter ice on. Wert
nesday, when the locals scored
their 6-3 win.
Bev Irvine led the Exeter
snipers withtwo goals, while
singles came from Lloyd Moore,
Gord Strang, Bob Armstrong and
Gerald McBride,
McLaughlin, Pauli and Arnold
Smith were the Mitchell marks-
men.
Bantams On The Ropes
Mitchell produced a strong ban-
tam team that turned hack the
the Exeter club 8-4 !and put them
on the ropes in the best -of -three
series. The local kids will have
to down Mitchell right on their
own ice and beat them again at
home if they hope to continue
along the WOAA playoff trait,
iiiitchell jumped off to a. 4-0
first period lead, produced a
single marker in the second, and
then came home strong with
three more inthe final 20 min-
utes of play.
Ken Warren was the big gun
for the winners with a hat -trick.
Murray Neil followed Warren
closely with two, while single
goals came off the sticks of
Ronnie Buckner, Dennis Boyd
and Doug Ellison,
Freddy Wells, still of pee wee
age, beat Tom McNaught in the
Mitchell net twice, while Ricky
Boyle and Don Cann each scored
once for Exeter.

Lucan Irish are starting to
roti. The Irish Six dumped the
first -place Exeter 14ohawks 7.4
right in Exeter on Saturday
night and :genie Tip with a 10-7
victory over the visiting Forest
Lakesicles in Lucan an I''rictay
to push theinselves in for a share
of at least:.second place in the
WOAA ilon)ebrew - Intermediate
"n" League standings.
The two straight victories
dives .Coach Bob White's club
an 11.7 a vin -loss record for the
season which is as good as the
higblY-rated Clinton Colts.
The Colts themselves, had a
disastrous week, by dropping
two games'' in a row. The first
one was on home ice to a short-
handed band of Exeter Mown
hawks by a 6.3 score and then
they took a 14.6 drubbing from
the fifth -place Blackwell Boli'
days.
Blackwell Red•Hot
Holidays seem to have shifted
their club into high gear over
the past week as they scored
more goals in their last two out-
ings than they .did in two weeks
previous. Blackwell pounded out
a 14-6 decision over Clinton and
then romped to an easy 13-4 vic-
tory over Ilderton Wildcats, on
Tuesday .night in Lucan. •
The first tie game of the sea-
son was played in Zurich on Fri-
day night when the Flyers and
Ilderton Wildcats battled ^ to a
7.7 draw.
Colts Here t ridgy
Clinton Colts will make their
last scheduled appearance of the
season here on Friday night in
an 8'30 game. The Colts, still
smarting from the 6-3 lacing ab-
sorbed in Clinton last Wednes-
day, will be out to even the four
game series with a second vic-
tory on Exeter ice. The Mohawks
won a game at home in their
last three tries.
On the 'sante night, Pt. Ed-

Sparks Win
Lucan Irish set the Exeter
Mohawks back on their heels
for the second time this season
on Saturday night in Exeter
when they chalked up a 7.4
victory before close to 400 fans.
Each club Were minus several
of their playing personnel for
the sixty -minute tussle. The loss
was the second for the tribe in
sixteen games.
Centre Harry Wraith was the
hero of the night as far as Lu -
can was concerned as the tricky
centre fired home three goals
and set up two others with his
Tine two-way display.
Other Irish markers were
scored by AI heady, playing
coach Bob White, Don Pletcher
and Gary Vowels.
Exeter goalgetters included
Doir Gravett with two, Jim Load-
er and Billy Pir eombe •with one
each.
Irish Lead All The Way
Lucan beat the Mohawks to
the punch in each period as far
as the scoring was concerned.
In the first, Wraith's first goal
of three opened up 'the game at
9:11 and although Gravett. tied
it up at 11:07, Ready offset the
marker with the second Irish
goal at 15:11 to give the visit-
ors a 2.1 first period, lead.
The fighting Irish added to
their total in ;The segond period
when Bobs }White sent a long
l from gh a
drive from the point tilrou
nate .f players into the net
for a 3-1 lead at '2:55,,.
Just when it looked as theugh
Lucan was beginning to pull
away, the Mohawks ,caught fire
for a pair of goals in succession
to tie the game up temporarily.
Playing Coach "Red" Loader
end "aoofn" were the tribe
marksmen,
However, Don Fletcher, who
was left in front of the Exeter
net uncovered while -on a power
play, shot his club back into
the lead once again.
The third period saw the Irish
outscore the homesters 3-1 after
Bill pinconibe bad rallied for
Exeter at 5:43 to tie the game
up once again. Two goals by
Wraith and 0110 by Vowels was
all that Lucan needed to take
their first game in; four trice
from the tribe.
