DURNAN, one-time member a the famed MONTREAL CANADIEN regime and now coach of the KITCHENER-WATERLOO DUTCHMEN of the O.H.A. Senior ",A" league, feels that the whole source of trouble in minor league players today is that they are overcoached, "Young players .up to the age of 12 years should not be taught how to handle power plays etc:, At this early 'age, the youngsters should be develop. - Ing the fundamentals .of the game only, because the rest of it is away over their heads," said Bill, "One of the main reasons why the big time isn't getting such individual or combination stars like it used to is because of the pressure put on the kids at an early age. Junior "A" hockey is disgusting! All the players are interested in are brawls. One reason for this • is that they're all coached more or less the same way to play a hockey game instead of tletting their personal talents develop thoroughly." When you actually sit (Rim and think about it, the hockey mastermind seems to be hitting the nail right on the head. When this corner played junior hockey along with "HEIDIE", "OBIE", WHARNSBY, TRENDELL and a few of the others, we were taught o drive the puck into the corner and go in after it. Consequently the majority of the stickhandling art is, lost. Of course every player keeps .a certain amount of the skill but think of the combinations which could be produced if' junior coaches weren't so anxious to wrap up championships every 'ear they iced a club. I'ni sure that many of the players this column will reach will readily under- stand what Dumanmeans. DURNAN likes thc way the box system i used by the NEW YORK RANGERS in killing of penalties. In fact, he likes it so well he has his club using it and feels it is o one of the main reasons 'why the DUTCHIES are high in the league standings. An old friend of ours, "HONEY" KUNTZ, ac- companied Durnan and JOHN GOMAN, business manager of the Dutchmen, to the CAPITOL'S home rink to instruct anyone interested in becoming referees. All of the WOAA whistle tooters witnessed so far this year should have been 'on hand to learn some of the game fundamentals. Of coUrse, they 'weren't. Howevet the overall picture of what the Lake Huron Zone Recreation Council tried to do proved very valuable to everyone in attendance. Next year we hear that there may be three schools throughout Western. Ontario in operation to give more coaches, managers and referees a chance to attend to make better prayers out the up-and-coming Canadian. youtlt., * * MOHAWKS GETTING AROUND — Business manager BILL MUSSER of the tribe informs us that he received a letter from an ardent hockey 'fan in the city of QUEBEC by the name of GERRY HAZEL. Here's what he wrote: "Being a fan of the Exeter Mohawks and always glad of their success, I would like to have a group picture of the team for the 1957- 58, season with a souvenir program. Last year I re- ceived a copy of your souvenir program for which I thank you. In the meantime, I requested a -group picture of the '56-'57 tez.m. Will you please let one know if it is not 'possible to get one of these pictures. The name of Gerry Hazel is Greek to us but we're sure tickled pink that the club has an onlooker all the way from Quebec City. We understand that a shot of the '56257 team is not available Gerry but '55-'56 and '57-'58 pictures will be in the mail' some time this season. * * ANYONE FOR BROOMBALL? - Alvin Willert, manager of the Exeter Arena, relayec a valuable piece of information into our ear over the Bell in- vention today that we think will be of real import- ance to all broomball lovers. The arena manager has called a meeting in the local ice palace for this Sun- day afternoon at 1:30 p.m, for all.who are interested in entering a team in the broomball league this winter. Everyone is welcome ,and it is hoped that at least six teams will be pounding the ball around in '58. Reports have it that CENTRALIA, EXETER KINS- MEN, DASHWOOD, ZURICH and of course the EX- ETER MOHAWKS have all indicated that they will produce teams, One definite starter is the MO - HAWKS. They have rounded. out two exhibition wins over JACK FULLER'S MERRY MAIDS and now are,. waiting for GARY MIDDLETON to don his snow shoes once again for a rock roll game. Oh yes, we almost forgot to pass along the information to the DASHWOOD crew that the MOHAWKS will be more than delighted to is all of their gatres this year under the lights providing they are all of broomball Variety! 010infliifilifliffintliiiiiiituvO4MOtilithiflutt1001Wolumin,01,1,01010011WOluiniiiiitiiiiiftitiM011110110, . , 403 ANDREW ST., EXETER PHONE' 719 Heating, Plumbing, Sheet Metal Work — Oil Burners —. .514tuttitututimiumustumuumunitumuttuummuutummutitanumottummulauutmottu s oo uentme? tounaufflummummtumuuttumummtimmottunitutuommumminimmutimutimoutiliumumnito.
