Indeed, no vil lege in Upper Canada—where the buildinge are generally erected of wood,— should be wanting in the necessary precautions agate.% fire, via : ladders, buckets, and fire engines, .ad if possible an organised fire company. The lugs at Caledo.0 on Sun- day, esu considerable, but we uoderetanJ that it was in great part covered by iosur- ence. Two berme were burned to death in the .table, and another seriously burnt before being got out. The flames spread too fast to prevent therm accidents. The honest had only been taken a few minute* before, from the stage that had arrived from Hamilton. The accident, from which so much loss bat arisen, is attributed to the carelessness of some person, lighting his pipe with a match, or smoking in the stable —a practice that cameo' be too generally condemned, or too severe:y poached, by Municipal regulations. It is well worthy the consideration of local conncillors, throughout Upper Canada. We bate scarcely ever witnessed a more striking in- stance, of the great ureic. to be rendered, by eves a small engine, properly eppl:ed, than in the prevention of fire spreading in Caledonia on this occasion : and it is evi- dent, had there bee. a proper supply of water and suitable engines, tiw.ously at hand, that Mead's Hotel on the one side, and Campbell's Tallor's Shop on the other side might have been easily saved. Anoth- er circumstance is worthy of being mention- ed, that the Shoe Shop. close by Campbell's house, would certainly have gone with the others but for its having been roughcast, or plastered with lime, all round the outer frame work. Had the bare wooden boards been exposed, they would soon have taken fire, from the proximity of the bone to the burning one adjoining. The cost of rough - cut buildings is not more in general than that of ordinary framed and boarded buildings ; and in the erection of houses in villages, where bricks cannot be either pro- cured, or the expense of -them afforded, it will always be worth while to adopt the roughcast wall, if at all pos.ible. 1t gives beauty,-darabiliy, and security to the buil- ding, with very little, if any, increase of coat. Ln some localities, indeed where lime is plentiful, the roughcasting must be *beeper than the clapboarding.—Colonist. Inspector Gene - rats "estimate of certain expenses of the civil Government of the Proviso. of Canada, for the year 1860, for which a apply is re- quired,' the total sum requisite for the pre- sent year's expenditure, is, exclusive of the supplementary estimate, £811,994 0s 10d. As some may feel anxious to learn bow so large a sum is disposed of, we take the liberty to present our readers with a few of the items of exisenditure. None can doubt the utibipof the Militia 8ta8, which costs the country in dollars $8,684; god who can say that the annual services of the Legisla- tive Council are not worth $64,0801 The expenses of the Legislative Assembly ere $179,000. Pensions to the amount of $2,132 aro paid to Officers of the late Leg- islative bodies of Upper and Lower Canada. To hospital., kc., there is an allowance of $68,000. The contingent expenses of the administration of justice amount to *148,- 771 iocludin an allowance of *16,000 to four new Juges In Lower Canada. in the Miscellaneous charges amounting to $I67,- 894, we find the largest to be *14,000 for printing laws, lac.; $27,120 u expenses of Montreal Police force; *88,083 the cost consequent upon the removal of the seat of government to Toronto; a retiring pension 01 $1,200 per annum to R. A. Tucker, Esq., Tate Provincial Registrar; expenses of In- spector General to England to negociate a loan, $1,600; ditto of other miniow on ',ebbe service $1,644; expensn of Police Magistrates in Quebec and Montreal $1,400. The salaries to officers of the Court of Common Pl... $17,140. and to those of the Court of Chancery $I3,100.— These are but trifling portions of the ag- gregate expenditure, but some of them aro charges which may sot be unworthy of at- tention. The exposing of the Militia Staff, though email, might we think, be wade less, as twilit those of the Legislative Council without causing any carious diminution of their usefiilneee. We are ectirely opposed to the pensioning system, but would u,ur- edly be unwilling to deprive those who are already in receipt of pensions of the some ggnarn, tied to them. To the support of Hospitals and otbar benevolent institutions the amount tented le not toe great, sod lhs eestingeet expenses of the admlel.tra- tion of Justice eaonot be materially loose - ed sail men will bare bunion wee 'boogie t• too. bow to behave themselves proper- - ly, i' thous being compelled to do so.
