Let's Talk
SPORTS
By DON "BOQM COQM" QRAVETT
Sports !Editor
it isn't exactly pretest time on the hockey
front since that usually doesn't start, until playoff
time, but the EXET4R MOHAWK club officials ,are
having their troubles, It's not what •one would expect
such as the use of illegal players or even having
troubles with the players themselves, It's the WOAA.
This may strike you as a bit funny to be sounding
off on a pitch such as this with all of the current
edition of .the "homebrew" MOHAWKS as eligible
as cream in milk, but although everything is on the
4.1p and up, the WOAA officials don't like it in the
least, Why? It's beaeuse of the league we're playing
in.
ALF LOCKAlliGE, well-known around here
for his long -hour cliscussiOns •over the slebating table
on the use of players by the tribe over the past few
seasons, told this corner'that we're winning too many
games. We tried to point Out to hini that although
EXeter has won its first five gams, three of them
were only by ONE -goal and that two of the one -goal
games had the winning marker scored in the last
minute of play, To us, you couldn't .ask for anything
any closer. Apparently they think that we're just
keeping the scores close. I only wish ye were.
•"I am just going by the score sheets turned
in to me," said ALF. "You're beating Intermediate
"B" clubs! This proves you're too strong for the
• rest of the WOAA homebrew teams." We can't go
along with this. As the season progresses, Intermed -
fate "B" teams who haven't got their full quotas of
imports and. waivers will undoubtedly strengthen.
What can we do when this happens? The only answer
is, unless we improve, we're going to take it on the
chin from the teams we just managed to edge out
in earlier season games by one goal.
The thing that made our brushcut stand up
straighter than ever was when president JOHN
BELL and LOCKRIDGE got together and suggested
• that we move up into the Intermediate "B" class.
It's too late to round up any imports or waivers if
we did. decide to make the iriove, we told him, but
then he Stated that we didn't need any more players
to play in the higher calibre. He must think we be-
long to the MONTREAL CANADIEN reghte!
LOCKRIDGE, who never lets a trick go by,
particularly with Exeter for some reason or another,
asked Coach JIM "RED" LOADER to write . him a
letter stating why he didn't want the team to go
Intermediate "B".
First of all, "Red" happens to be fresh out of
ink and secondly, it's actually 'none of the WOAA's
business what classification we decide to enter as
long as we follow the rule book.
Last, but not least, most of the WOAA officials
on hand tried to convince us that we did NOT make
known our desires to continue on into O.H.A. play -
downs if our team wasn't put out by some other.
competitor in the western homebrew class. As far
as BILL MUSSER, & CO. are concerned, we never
did have any other intentions but to continue on.
Winning just the WOAA championship. is a small
drop in the bucket to winning the Ontario title. Mind
• you, I'm not saying that we'll win anything, but if
there is achance we would like to shoot for the
works,
Before getting the OHA playdowns straighten-
• ed eut, JOHNNY BELL and LOCKRIDGE each told
us that none .of the other "homebrew" teams wanted.
to; continue, When they said this, immediately we
• brought it to their -attention that it would be an easy
matter fOr us, being the only club to continue, to
go on. Then' all of .a sudden, BELL blerts out that
PHILLIPSBURG would like to go on!
,Switimental feelings by WOAA officials to-
• wards certain teams have caused hard feelings in the
past and thislooks to be no exception. It was as clear
as: crystal to us. that Bell wanted PHILLIPSBURG to
represent .the WOAA in the O.H.A. playdowns auto-
matically. Why?.
It wonld appear to this corner that the WOAA.
Should be interested in sending its BEST representa-
tive into the OHA playdowns for the best possible
chance of bringing an AIL -ONTARIO title back to
Western:Ontario no matter who win it.
Once again, we're not saying the tribe is the best
homebrew, club in Western Ontario but if we win our
group; we, certainly won't let, anyone else represent
this pertion of Ontario without a playoff!.
. •The. way things were .left at the meeting,
PHILLIPSBURG will play a series with, EXETER if
• they . are the 'only two clups interested in further
tOntrietilion.
•- The peculiar thing .about the whole setup is
that hone of the other clubs in the, league are squeal-
ing because Exeter is supposed to be so strong. It's
only the WOAA officials with Monsieur Lockridge at
the -head of it!
• Throwing all our daily troubles aside and
'looking at the calendar, we find that the Yuletide
• season is here again. So before. we stop banging the
keys on our typewriter for the seeond last time this
year, I want to wish you one and all • .
A VERY MERRY CHRISTMAS!
