GRAVETT ;Sports. Editor After our brie eminent in last week's column about the listless way the intermediate hockey Schedule was travelling along, it eertaintr didn't take long for things to change. On Monday night, President JOHN BELL, Secretary ALF LOCKRIDGE and Group Convenor DOUG- THORNDYKE and another member ef this year's WOAA executive, whose name pcapes tis at the moment, were in Exeter town hall inaugurating g newly formed schedule. The way everything stands at the present, EXETER MOHAWKS will have a 22-gainsehedulee. Since five of the games have been played, the tribe has 17 more to go, In this new setup, our local club will play CLINTON, ZURICH, LUCAN and ILDER- TON twice each in the home -and -home games while only one trip will be made to POINT EDWARD, FO- REST and BLACKWELL, Even though Exeter will only visit the far- away clubs once, the games will stand as two point - r.% No four point games will be played. Consequent- ly when. the schedule finishes up some time it •February; some of the teams will have played more games than the others. Position in the league will be calculated on a percentage basis like the baseball standings with the wins and losses meaning everything percenthge-wise to the final standings of each club in the league. As we understand it, HENSALL has withdrawn from the grouping officially to now leave an eight - team setup. According to the WOAA executive the top intermediate "B" team wilt leave the grouping by February 20 to compete against other teams for the right to enter into O.H.A. playdowns. We stand to be corrected on this statement but it sounded to us that the same thing prevails in the homebrew class that Exeter is in.. Using the word "homebrew" In, front of the WOAA executive is causing our club's officials some grief but we'll elaborate on it in next week's column. Getting back to the new schedule, we feel lt will keep the fans more interested in the league and give the people more hockey, which is what they want according to everyone I've talked to, LUCAN-EXETER SERIES—That was quite a • tussle over the weekend with the IRISH SIX with each game being won by a 4.3 score. BOB WHITE, • playing coach of LUCAN, will be looking for a big ' wrlteup in this space on how we scalped the sham- rocks but we're going to fool him a little. Even • thoughwe did take the two -game series, we feel that the LUCAN IRISH are far from a beaten hockey club. Their forwards particularly, we thought, Skated- • very well and outshone the tribe with their passing • plays on the move. True, we had some ccanbinations going for us, but on the overall picture we felt that • White had his forwards on the move more when • taking the passes. STEVE STOREY was the best man on the ice for the trish in our books. He played well • in each game even though he didn't get on the score Sheet in the second game, McALPINE (Bob Goldharn the second) wasn't far behind. Steve with his perform. ance. of blocking Mohawk shots, defensive -wise. Of course, ivhen a club wins a couple of • games it must have had something. This we did! For an overall performance we had a young man by the nickname of "HEIDIE''' who played a terrific amount of hockey, With him the performances of BAKER • and OBIE (who didn't let becoming a family man worry him) were solid. However, this wasn't all that did it. Team play and the spirit to win sparked by youngsters like PINCOMBE, RUSSELL, COATES, BLOMMAERT and the re,st of them to get in. there and dig was the main factor. We theught the most outstandifig performance from an Exeter minor was turned in by JIMMY Mac - DONALD, Jim, an. easygoing guy who likes to down a chocolate bar and a ,bottle•of pop around 'the supper hour, left the fans talking after his Saturday perform- ance, I certainly hope he can keep up the good work because Pm sure before the season is over we're going to need plenty of performances like it to get anywhere. • With another two games added to the schedule between the two clubs, the fans should really be in for a. treat when the two tangle .again. * * TORONTO MAPLE LEAFS of the National Hockey League have everyone stumped! When they • first took to the i' ce everyone we spoke to thought it was a sure bet that they would end up dead last. In fact, some were so sure they wagered five bucks on the deal! It's still early in the season, but if the MAPLEOS keep flying the way they ate at the present they might end up in second place, • It's hard to understand how a team can catch fire With a new coach at the reins after performing so sluggishly the year before for someone else, If the Leafs win the Stanley Cup or even make the playoffs, Coach BILLY REAY should be made Mayor of TORONTO next year. The goal coneluded an uphill battle from the start of the game,,for the Tribe, as Lucan jumped into a 1-0 lead before most of the spectators had r hed their seats. lat•ed Sevington dented the twine far the Irish Six with Steve • Storey assisting on the play. At 8.35, Larry Heideman was on the receiving end of a pair of short passes by Bill Oberle and Don Gravett from behind the Lucan net, and he tied the score. The play darried on with each side taking turns testing rival netrninders, but it wasn't until 10.36 that Storey, who was left standing uncovered to the side of the Exeter eet, took advantage of his opportunity to slap in ,a loose puck on a goalmouth scramble, Centre Harry Wraith • and Leftwinger Don Pletcher drew assists on the play. Trailing 2.1 half way through the second period, Don Gravett put the Mohawks back on even terms when Barnes miscalculat- ed on a slow backhander. Three minutes and thirty-seven seconds later, the Tribe went ahead for the first time in the game when Murray Brintnell sank Gravett's rebound off Barnes' pads. Defencernan Bill Waghorn also drew an assist on the ,play. However, the lead was short lived as Steve Storey, one of the best rnen on the ice for Lucan, drilled his second goal of the game -- a high shot into the top righthand corner of the Exeter net that Gar Baker had no chance on. The effective three -goal burst was due mainly to the superb shifting and stickhardling of Centreman Bill ()bale, and the tenacious forechecking display put on by Leftwinger Jimmy MacDonald, who ditorganized the Irish Six:. Oberle started the three -goal explosion after thelteams played through a slow first twenty min- utes of play, when he shifted in, from centre ice to deke Goal - tender Ted Lindsay out of the net after taking a pats from MacDonaldf and JIM Loader at 1L53. Paul Baynham and Laskin drew ',titan interference penal- ties hi the opening period While Playing Coaches Bob White, of Lucan, and "Red" Leader, of Exeter, each served two -minute holding peealties. In a much faster second period, Bill Pincombe was the first to catch the referee's eye for bolding, and was followed hY Defencenian Ray Yelie for hook - big. Larry Iiiidertian tOunded out the penalty parade when he got the thumb for holding the puck against the boards by him- self. .Bev irrbshott went to the sin bin at 1,9,32 of the final stain* when confusion prevailed, with the Lucan goaltender skating off and on the ice a nuMber of times. The Irish Six Were caught with too many men on the ice. The Don Fletcher -Steve Storey- HarryWraith line stood mit for the Irish as they threatened to score on many- dangerous piayi.
