When I called Mrs. Luther

week on the phone she was busy
in the basement planting bulbs
for indoor flowering. She said
she would put them, already
planted, in pots, in the hotbed
outside; cover them well with
leaves and leave them until after
Christmas anyway. By this time
they have developed a good
root system which can be told
by the roots growing through
the drainage hole in the bottom
or by upending the pot and not-
ing the masses. of roots, At this
stage, too, the flower bud can
be seen pushing its way up out
of the bulb.
•• Then Mrs. Reynolds brings
the bulbs that she wants to
flower first into the house, giv-
t.. ing the growing bulbs partial

putting them in a sunny window
givingplenty of moisture and
watching the flower or flowers
reach the blooming stage. The
bulbs may be planted singly or
' in twos, threes or even more.

I asked Mrs. Reynolds if the
bulbs were any good for future
use and she said she always
threw them out as it took two
or three years for them to pro-
duce worthwhile flowers again
when planted outdoors. Another
bulb gardener tells us that all
her outdoor hyacinth blodm in
the spring are from bulbs which
have bloomed in the house dur-

take a year or two it is worth
it and they bloom each spring

said. •

to how four bulbs came to bloom
simultaneously, Mrs. Pickard
said the answer was to plant
bulbs of the same kind and ecu -
