When I called Mrs. Luther Reynolds, William Street, last Claire Hoffman Wed In London week on the phone she was busy in the basement planting bulbs for indoor flowering. She said she would put them, already planted, in pots, in the hotbed outside; cover them well with leaves and leave them until after Christmas anyway. By this time they have developed a good root system which can be told by the roots growing through the drainage hole in the bottom or by upending the pot and not- ing the masses. of roots, At this stage, too, the flower bud can be seen pushing its way up out of the bulb. •• Then Mrs. Reynolds brings the bulbs that she wants to flower first into the house, giv- t.. ing the growing bulbs partial 4._ light for a few days and then putting them in a sunny window givingplenty of moisture and watching the flower or flowers reach the blooming stage. The bulbs may be planted singly or ' in twos, threes or even more. Mr. and Mrs. Hoffman will re- side in Exeter. Mrs. Reynolds advises buying bulbs •especially advertised for • forcing indoors and it pay $ to buy the exhibition size in her " opinion. Almost any type of con- tainer can be used if drainage : LS provided by meant of broken pieces of pottery or stones placed In the bottom although florists advise using the ordinary red clay pots. I asked Mrs. Reynolds if the bulbs were any good for future use and she said she always threw them out as it took two or three years for them to pro- duce worthwhile flowers again when planted outdoors. Another bulb gardener tells us that all her outdoor hyacinth blodm in the spring are from bulbs which have bloomed in the house dur- ing the winter. "Even if it does take a year or two it is worth it and they bloom each spring frim then on," this gardener said. • Last winter at a supper at the church an attractive bowl of four white hyacinths centered. the table. By inquiry we found that they had .been grown by Mr, and Mrs. C. V, Pickard, John street. To the , question as to how four bulbs came to bloom simultaneously, Mrs. Pickard said the answer was to plant bulbs of the same kind and ecu - or together. If different bulbs were grouped together they would flower at different times, A friend on William Street has success in growing ` paper - white narcissi in water, anchored by stones. When Asked why she preferred growing them in water she said she liked to watch the roots develop and it was clean- er than using earth.
