• You help finance more production and make
higher earnings possible
• You help to keep the %line of your dollar up

CITY -
PROV.
Ghost Of Mrs. O'Mally
Lurking In Your Home?
Nearly 100 years ago, in the
city of Chicago, lived a cow
which, while it never won a blue
ribbon at any livestock show,
was none the less destined to be-
come world famous. It belonged
to a Mrs. O'Leary and, one fate-
ful' night. in the year 1871, it
kicked over an oil lamp in the
barn, starting a fire. Which
devastated almost all of the city.
One hundred thousand people
were ,rendered homeless, 'nearly
500 died, and property damage
ran into the millions.
Today, says the Canadian Insti-
4tute of Plumbing and Heating,
the spectre of Mrs, O'Leary's
unfortunate cow lurks in. thou-
sands of Canadian homes, ready
at any moment to "kick over the
lamp" and reduce them to rubble
and - ashes, with perhaps the
tragedy of death as an tater-
math. Of the 50,000 -odd fires that
break out in this country an-
nually, the Institute points out,
more than 25 per cent are
attributable, directly or indirect-
ly, to faults in the home heating

system. And the irony of it is
that with proper fire prevention
habits, most of them could be
averted altogether.
With this in mind, the Instittite
makes these suggestions. Start in
the basement, where the, heating
plant itself is located. Check to
see that no rubbish, and particu-
larly inflammable rubbish, :has
collecfed near the plant, during
the summer months. Make sure
that all smoke pipes and warm
air ducts -leading from the plant
are leak -proof. Double-check
methods used for ash disposal,
because . ashes which are pre-
sumed to be "out," may often
still contain...the sparks of a
serious fire.
Be particularly 'careful where
pipes and ducts that carry hot
air or smoke adjoin wooden parts
of the building, as over -heated
wood and. similar material can
readily 'burst into flame. Pay
special attention te the chimney
stack. See that any cracks in the
stack, - loose mortar between
bricks or possible escape holes
in the insulation are repaired
without fail. Have the chimney
examined for accumulation of
soot, and -cleaned if any is found.
Chimney soot is a double hazard,
for a chimney fire can be danger-
ous not only to the house itself,
but. sends up showers of sparks
'which may land on inflammable
material in the immediate neigh-
bourhood and cause further
damage to other people's
property.:
One major cause of heating
system fire which can also be
considered seriously is that of•
over -loading the heating plant.
Many plants which have been in
service for a long imriod of years
are now unable to provide the.
heat reauired of them by modern
standards of comfort. To over-
come this, the owners overload
the plant with fuel and frequently
start fires that destroy the entire
house. The correct remedy, of
course, is the installation of a
new heating plant which will
provide the required heat for
comfort. •At the same time it
will save the householder money
in fuel consumption and hours
of irksome labour in servicing.
