Rough Water'
Halts Dredge
Dredging operations in Grand
Bend harbor were delayed thiS
week by high waves on the lake,
Dean Construction Co., Belle
River, has been working in the
haj bor for the past week but
could not continue Monday and
Tuesday'J)ecause of rough Water.
The company's contract, valued
at over 42.1,000, calls for the rd-
moval of approximately 8,500
cubic yards of silt from the river,
The dredge had to start work
at the mouth of the rivet because
it is so shallow there. the loaded
barge could not get through.
The company has three units
operating on the job—the dredge,
with a shovel which lifts about a
yard of dirt; the barge, whioh
carries over 200 yards; and a
large tug which pulls the barge.
Sand removed from the harbor
is being dutnped about two miles
out in the lake.
The work will lower the river
bottom to six feet below water
surface inside the Harbor and
seven feet outside it. Dredging
covers that portion of the river
which is the responsibility of the
Federal Government, This ex-
tends from the mouth to about
200 feet east of•the beach road
on the north side.
