Public School Teacher

Miss Velma Ballagh, of the
Exeter Public School teaching
staff, enjoyed a 53 -day _trip
through 'United States, Western
Canada and into Mexico in July
and August.
Miss Ballagh was .one of a
party of 120, mostly teachers,
who loft London in three buses
for an eight weeks' tour, Some
of the party were exchange
teachers from Great Britain and
Australia, Who wished to see as
much of America as possible be -
for returning home.
Crossing the border at Detroit,
they travelled through the stales
of Ohio and Iowa to Montana,
and into AIberta, taking in the
Calgary Stampede. They con-
tinued on to the coast and Van-
couver Island, and down along
the Pacific cbast through the
states of Washington, Oregon,
Nevada, California, and Arizona,
to -Tia Juana in Mexico.
In Hollywood, California, they
drove through Beverley Hills to
see the beautiful homes of the
movie stars. Many of them were
surrounded by tall hedges or
stone walls for privacy: The
grounds often extended over sev-
eral acres and are beautifully
landscaped with swimming pools,
flower gardens and patios behind
the house. She said her group
didn't recognize any movie stars,
"but we did see Jack Benny's
maid. taking his dog. for a walk."

Beauty and others Disney stories
are portrayed. "It has become
over -commercialized," Miss Bal -
high said. They visited• Las
Vegas, in Nevada, from 3.30 to
6 a.m., when the gambling dens
and the wide streets were ablaze
with bright lights and activity.
"You couldn't imagine any place
so gay," Mist Ballagh remarked.
As they were leaving, the places
were closing, and during the day
all would be closed and quiet.
The Grand Canyon was an im-
pressive sight, but Lo Miss
130100 the Bryce Canyon in
Arizona was more outstanding.
Here the natural rock formation
portraYed well-known figures,
such as Queen Victoria, the three
Wisemen, an organ. and money
and Thor's hammer. "Yow would
declare they were carved in the
rock by human. hands," she said.
They made their way across
the states of Colorado, Nebraska,
and Iowa to Chicago - and
home.
They parked for the most part
in national parks where mem-
bers of the party took turns in
preparing the meals and wash-
ing the dishes. "We got to know
each other very ,well, living in
such close quarters for eiglit
weeks," was ,Miss Ballagles
corn inent.
"Every day something comes
up in our school studies that
reminds me. of my trip and the
places I have seen, and the boys
and girls are thrilled to hear
about .it from someone who has
•actually been there and seen it.
Already I have found my experi-
ences on the trip helpful in my
teaching," said Miss Ballagh.
In this century Canada has
had three Liberal Prime Mini-
sters and three Conservative. All
have been graduates in law,

Looking In With Liz
Juliette, Mate
Perfect Couple
Juliette was rehe.arsing fo
her Saturday night show whe
George Murray introduced us
If you saw ber at Grand Ben
this summer you will know tha
she is not the 'stylish stout'
articles about her had led me
to believe. She is not svelte of
course but just a well-propor-
tioned young woman who, in any
other profession, would be eon-
sidered average.

n facial gestures. Now he seems
, much more relaxed. "I'm not,"
d he told me, "but I'm glad it
t looks that way".
She wore a smart toast -colour-
ed dress with a cowl neckline
and her shoes were little more
Wan a couple of straps.
Outgoing and vital, the charm-
ing singer is obviously devoted
to her musician husband Tony
Cavassi. She was running
through a song at the piano
when she saw him put aside his
flute for a break pgriod and
she stopped to call out an in-
troduction,
man, very proud of ,his. wife. At
first glance it would seem that
the quiet man and the exuber-
ant woman were rnis-mated but
a few minutes of conversation
quickly- demolishes that thought.
I came away thinking "what a
perfect couple". •
"Give my regards to those
pert little redheads. They're so
attractive it's a shame we don't
have colour TV", Juliette said
as I left the rehearsal room dn
my way back to the Country
Hoedown set.
I passed her good wishes
along to the Haines SisterV who
were genuinely delighted.
I used to be under the im-
pression that everyone in TV
knew everyone. else. But I know
differently now.
While talking'• to Bob Goulet
once I Mentioned a compliment
that Denny Vaughan had paid
to Bob's talent and the optimis-
tic comments Denny had made
about Bob's future chances. He
bearned.."Reallk?" Did he say
that? Thanks for telling me, That
really means a lot. You know
I've never met Denny Vaughan
but I admire hint and I'll -value,
his opinion." He shook his head'
and smiled, lAnd he said that,
well for goodness sakes".
Thinking of Bob Goulet re-
minds me that Summer Show-
time will soon be making way
for the regular version of Show-
time. Bob will be back and. so
Shane Rimmer and Ken Steele
are going to be on the loose. I
hope CBC will slate them for
some TV appearances during the
winter. Both boys are talented
and have •many fans, •
I think Ken is a most im-
proved performer. His voice al-
ways was good but nerves caus-

As for Shane Rinimer, he
seems headed for big things
with both his singing and his
acting talents receiving some ;
recognition. Now he tells me
that a few fan clubs are sprout-
ing up and that's ‘a sure sign of
ultimate sucess,
Anne Gable who sings on Boll -
day Ranch is such a nice person,
She's learning to cook and some
of her kitchen experimentrwould
make hilarious comedy skits. So
far she has one recipe down
pat, a shrimp dish with lots of
herbs, sherry and other exotie
additions. "Not very good for
breakfast I guess,' she says
laughing, "but I had to start
somewhere with my cooking
lessons".
Jackie Rae still hasn't made
up his mind about the New York
offeCbut it looks now as if the
many projects he's involved with
in Toronto might keep him from
accepting the American show.
Joan Fairfax was one of the
first performers to sign a con-
tract with CBC for the '57-'58
season. Even as early as last
'February Joan asked me to keep
my lingers crossed for her. She
had a feeling that the' Denny
Vaughan show was going to fade
out.
I, for one, think CBC was too
hasty in dr opp in g Denny
Vaughan. I'm sure they could
have used him to advantage, but
I'm glad they were wise enough
to hold on to the talented Miss
Joan is that rare combination:
a homespun glamour -girl: More
about that next week.
