Fallis has just been transferred to RCAF Station Centralia as Officer Command- ing in Servicing Unit to replace S/L Woodrow who has moved to RCAF Station Gimli, Mani- toba. SIL Fallis joined the RCAF in June, 1940, as an aeroengine fitter and then remustered tQ aircrew in .April, 1942, as a pilot. After training, he became a fly- ing instructor and was Stationed at Brantford and Centralia be- fore going overseas in the fall of 1944. He was trained•on Mos- quitoes and was flying with 605 (RAF) Squadron in Gerniany when the war finished. After his release, from the RCAF, S/L Fallis attended To- ronto University. and obtained his BASc. in 1949. He rejoined the RCAF in the Technical List, and went back to Toronto Uni- versity where he obtained his MASe (Aero -Eng) in the spring of 1950. " He spent the following year at Air Force Headquarters, Otta- wa, as a project engineer in the Directorate of Aircraft Develop- ment, on such aicraft as the CF -100 and Mk, IV Harvard, From Air Force Headquarters, S/L Fallis spent two years at Winnipeg as the Chief Technical Officer, and in 1953 he was transferred to Training Com- mand Headquarters at' Trenton, Ontario. He was transferred to Centralia from his posit* in the Ground Training Branch at Trenton, African Violets - Continued from Page ,7 using the plastic pots advertised for these plants 'because the sharp edge bruises the leaf if it rests against it. If you live in an, area where the water is hard, choose a glazed pot or one 'with a smooth edge. The hard salts will accumulate on the edge of a rough surfaced pot and burn the plant leaves. Ope can dip the top edge of the pot in melted paraffin to protect the leaves. Whether to • water the plant from the top or the bottom is a controversial question. Mrs. Har- ris says .she always uses warm water and waters from the bot- tom. Others say water at the top but beware of too much water. More plants are killed from over - watering than under -watering. Cleanliness is important to this fastidious plant. If dusty, syringe the tops of the plants about once a month with a fine mist of Warm water, and lie careful to dry the leaves before exposing to strong' light. Crown rot is one of the evils that befall African violets. When the leaves wilt and droop nothing much can be .done about it. While some leaves are still healthy, Mrs. Harris advises. 'cut off some and start fresh plants . . . It's easier than trying to cure the 01deplant."- At African violet shows, the leaves of the ,plants on display seem to be spaced perfectly, and the blooms seem to come irt..the right places. To accomplish this the plants are turned very .often to ensure uniformity, If,a leaf is out of place, a toothpick or other tiny stake is pushed into the soil in the proper plate to hold the leaf where it • is desired. The same precaution is taken with 'the flower spikes. • All told, raising these lovely plants is quite a science, and each grower, seems to work out a pet ' method of / cultivating them, • Letter From Brinsiey By MRS, CECIL.
