In direct c'ontr'ast to. last year's when one team withdrew to spoil the Meet all the events Trolled along in fine style and if future swimming classics continue to be as well organized, parents will firld.it a treat to be in attendance. Right from the starter's'gun to the official score sheets, which were bandied by KEN McLEQD, of LISTOWEL, everything moved in the quickest possible way, and the meet only took about an hour and a half to run off. One particular outstanding feature of this year's water classic was the splendid showing of BILL •GAJ4.10W and young PEGGY YOUNG, who hail from GODERICH. The two youngsters showed plenty of skill .on the waterways and deserved all the awards given to them, and more. The harbour town should be very proud of these two, as they have terrific possibil• #ties in the sport. Something new to the meet this year has been the addition of a "race official." This is, one of the best moves ever made by the teams because whatever he says goes, and it stops d. lot of petty arguing. I !night add that TOM DAVIES, who was the official from STRATFORD, did a remarkable job i11 seeing that ,all of the youngsters performed their swims correctly. TIGER -YANKEE SERIES -- A number of 'fans fron,Y DASH\STOOD, ZURICH, EXETER. and the other surrounding municipalities took in the Detroit -New York series over the weekend in the border city. This corner was there, too, to try to cheer those Yankee Doodle Dandies' along. The only trouble was that a young thap by the name of AL KALINE was in the park, too, and no !natter how loud we hollered, he choked out our sound with those ringing base hits. Well "CASE," you know what to do. "If ya can't beat • 'em,, BUY 'EM!" • The New Yorkers and AL LOPEZ' CHICAGO WHITE SOX hook up in a three -game series that - could prove fatal to either club. With New York riding that two -game lysing streak out of Detroit, maybe the WHITE SOX can overrun their opposition. On the other hand, when you look back at the records of the Yankee teams of old you'll find they always have a babit„of winning the big ones so we'll go along and say that they're at least good for two wins in the three games. If they let us down, I lI have to leave town, especially with so many ribs coining from two doors south of our office. We hear that "Monsieur" WOLFE was so happy over the BENGALS' two 'victories, that he almost ground his fingers up in the sausage machine, So check the meat before you buy! * * * THE HOCKEY FRONT -- Hockey teams through- out the district are getting scarcer and scarcer. TEDDY WILLIAMS, the once hard-working centre of the now -defunct GODERICH SAILORS, tells us there are no plans for a hockey club olierating out of that town. It l.00 ed as though there might be a scrappy Junior "B" club corning from the lake port, but now things have changed. It looks so bad up their way that even a homebrew team might not be organized. In EXETER, we have heard a number of rumors that .one or two sports enthusiasts are trying to get a homebre v club together with the help of some of last year's O.H,A.. Senior `IB" players who are now living in town. It sounds like a fair idea but trouble creeps in as to where and what teams Exeter can play. To date, ZURICH and LUCAN have indicated that serious thought is being given to pull out for the '57-58. season. If LUCAN doesn't come in, it is highly unlikelythat D will til ERTON rr 111 play° Mitchell is turning its Intermediate "B" team from last year into a strict- ly honlebrew club to cut down on these $5.00 and $10,00 a game players. It's•money like this that keeps the bills piling up. If Exeter, Lucan, liderton, Zurich, Mitchell and possibly Hensall could step in and form a six -team grouping and forget about the rest of the WOAA, it may be favourable to the whole district as players would be-all known and very little traveling would be necessary. The players wouldn't be roaming all over the countryside for halt the night. •It's a thought that representatives from the area should think about and bring. up . at their annual League meeting. * * M * THIS 'N' THAT * The EXETER BOWLING ALLEYS are opening up this Thursday for another . season. Eowvling is one of the major sportsin the district and many spend a lot of time on the alleys over tha winter months Congratulations to MR. IVA N VYESBER on his catch of a 15 -pound PIKE. On the Arial hole of 'tyle match, Larry 'placed en iron shot up on the green for an easy par while Sanders ended up short of the green with his lee shot and took two to get on. When he finished his chip shot he was ten feet from the cup and a missed putt Cost him the match. In the semi-final nmatch be- tween Jack Fuller and Emerson Desiardine, the winner won eight of the first nine holes and coast- ed along to win the match on the 13th. In the third round of the con- solation match, Bob Dinney put Bill McKenzie out of the run- ning while Lorne Kleinstiver de- feated "Bud" Preszcator. Kleinstiver is now waiting for the winner of the Lloyd Stewart - Don Gravett playoff. Stan Frayne is to play the winner of the I3i11 Cochrane .Tack Fuleher match in the third round.
