Servants .8e/ow Stahl
Aim -01 Many Own.pr$
A. staff .0P servants "below
stars" Sounds MY out of the
reach of .average Canadians,
doesn't it? Yet, in to -day's world
of mechanical servants, AOP
thing is possible. and strangely
eno.ugh,. some of the Most .14se..
ful .of them have their locale
"below stairs," Just AS tbe 40m-
estie staff .0 the gentry used
to do.
These modern servants, accord-
ing to the Canadian Institute, of
Plumbing and Heating, work si-
lently and ceaselessly to make
the lives of average ,Canadians
easier and: more oomfortable.
Only a few years ago, the area
below the stairs was a cluttered
up, dingy sort of cave. lorded
over by a not very Attractive
heating plant, probably an tut
lova,/ fuel bin, and most of the
household junk which had aeou
mutated. over a' period of years.
But more and more people are
rebelling against the tyranny of
this iron monster, and replacing
it with a more efficient and more
presentable servant in the form
of a modern heating plant, This
new beauty is. a real servant,
requiring a minimum of ser-
vice; taking up a minimum of
room, yet giving in return a
maximum pf economical warmth
to add to the comfort and well-
being of the family. .And what
more could one ask or expect
from a faithful servant?
And this is only part of the
story. Since the heating plant is
clean, compact and attractive
in appearance, it throws ,open
the entire basement area for
conversion into a rumpus room,
hobby shop or party rendezvous.
Here is high living below stairs
in the modern manner,
Still another member of that
below stairs staff of servants,
and one highly appreciated by
the housewife, is the planned
laundry room. The automatic
washing machine, may be one
of the greatest labour savers
since the invention of the wheel,
but it doesn't answer all the pro-
blems of a Monday morning. A
special room, however, parti-
tioned off from the rest of the
basement, with easy access to
the outdoor drying area, and
with the appliances of launder-
ing properly organized, Eertain-
ly is.
Here, work flow can be ar-
ranged so that -laundry goes from
sorting table to wash tubs, to
washing machine, to drying
area, to ironing board or
machine, with the least possible
stooping, back -tracking or back -
aching. And in the laundry room,
the- old-fashioned, hard -to -clean
tubs can be replaced by a mo-
dern unit in sparkling vitreous
