Scittaws, Too
OU Id,Sew
Every woman who uses a sew.
log machine knows its chief ad-
;vantage over hand sewing is that
the machine sews a lock stitch.
What will be news to borne
dressmakers is the recent .evi-
dence which has been discovered
by 1'rt*iessor Wilfred Jury of the
University of Western Ontario,
that the Huron Indians probably
knew how to sew .a lock stitch
:seven hundred years ago. His.
discovery does not. rob Mr. Isaac
Singer of his .century -old fame
for having invented the, first
lock stitch sewing machine, The
Indians sewed their lock ,stitch
by hand. •
Professor Jury found, when ex-
cavating on the: site of an Ian-
cient"iluron villiage, two bone
needles. They were unlike most
Indian bone sewing implements
which were like darning need-
les. These needles were hollow
down the center. Curious to see
how they would 'sew, the pro-
fessor threaded a hollow needle
with string.
He found that when be jab:led'
this needle through two pieces
of heavy cloth, it left a loop in
the string when it emerged on
the other side. He .took a second
string, ran it through the loop
of the first, pullet the needle
back and jabbed a new hole.
Again he ran the second ,string
through the loop. He was making
a lock .stitch.
The lock stitch the modern sew-
ing machine makes is done in
much the same way. But the
sewing machine needle is groov-
ed instead of being hollow. Local
sewinge
:center experts explain
that a knowledge of f e way a
lock stitch is made, helps a home
dressmaker to sew firm neat
seams. It is the pulling of ,the
upper thread from the needle
and the lower thread from the
bobbin at the correct tension, as
the .threads are drawn into the
material and locked together
that completes the stitch.
If both • upper and lower
threads are under the proper
tension, the lock occurs in the
center of .the fabric and' a per-
fect stitch is formed. If the ten-
sion on the needle thread is too
tight or if that on the bobbin
thread is too „loose, the needle
thread will lie along the upper
surface of the material. If the re-
verse in the case, the thread will
lie along the under edge of the
fabric,
Here are some hints for good
stitching. Fine •materials require
a .light tension, while heavy ma-
terials require a greater ten-
sion to produce a perfect stitch.
If. .too tight a tension is used on
a fine fabric, the threads may'
break when the material is pres-
sed flat, A bias seam will pucker
if the tension is tight. If the ten-
sion on a flat seam is too loose,
there is a danger the thread will
pull out This is why a long
stitch with loose tension is used
for machine basting,
Thus, like her Indian cousin
of centuries ago, today's home
dressmaker knows that •"a stitch
in time saves nine" only if it is
perfectly "locked".
